Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of WHO Malaria Technical Officer or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Malaria Elimination Officer will:

  • Work with the National Centre for Malariaology, Parasitology and Entomology (CMPE) staff to review the existing National Malaria Elimination Surveillance and Response Guidelines, and revise the guidelines based on lessons learnt and to align with the new National Malaria Strategic Plan 2021-23;
  • Work with the CMPE, Provincial and District Malaria offices and health facility staff to improve understanding and capacity to implement the revised malaria elimination strategies and activities, specifically to;
  • Support sub-national training on the new national Malaria Elimination and Surveillance and Response Guidelines in elimination areas;
  • Improve provincial and district malaria office capacity to regularly and systematically analyse and interpret malaria elimination surveillance data in the malaria information system (DHIS2) and to address common programmatic issues;
  • Assist the provincial and district malaria staff, as well as health facility staff, to conduct effective and timely case and foci investigation and response activities (including reporting);
  • Work with the National CMPE staff to develop a national malaria elimination certification roadmap, which includes the creation of key documents, policies, reporting systems and other criteria that are essential to meet the WHO malria elimination certification requirements;
  • Work with the CMPE and the national Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC), which is under the national Department of Communicable Disaese Control (DCDC), to improve the understanding, integration and utilization of malaria data at the PHEOC, as part of the strengthening and of this body to provide oversight and high level support for the effective implementation of malaria elimination activities.
  • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Educational additional comments

  • Bachelor’s degree in medicine, science, public health or another relevant associated health field
  • Post graduate degree in public health, epidemiology, health systems, health science or a related field.

Experience remark

  • A minimum of two years of work experience in a public health program or in a related field;
  • Experience working in disease surveillance and/or public health implementation is desirable;

    • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
    • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;

  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
  • Have affinity with or interest in public health, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.
