ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

The hunger crisis in Afghanistan is unfolding at a rapidly, with over half the country’s population of 40 million now facing acute food insecurity—the highest number the humanitarian community has ever seen in Afghanistan. Work opportunities are shrinking, with most households now reporting just one day of work per week. This comes on top of the worst drought in years, which is especially concerning for the 85 percent of the population who rely on agriculture for livelihoods.

Preventing and mitigating a drastic increase in hunger and malnutrition is the aim of WFP in Afghanistan which can only be achieved through the scaled up and sustained complementary food security and nutrition interventions, combined with a scale-up of resilience interventions to safeguard gains. WFP has embarked on a significant month on month scale-up of its crisis response and resilience programmes across the country, ensuring that the programme is delivered at the right scale and time, targeted to the right areas. WFP is also actively following up on evolving trends to pre-empt hotspots, while guaranteeing quality and maximum impact of the programme through the monitoring of these hotspots to be able to support continued donor advocacy.

JOB PURPOSE

To deliver FSQ related support to Area office supply chain and program team.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. Implement and monitor application of protocols to ensure that food quality and safety principles are followed across the supply chain. 2. Visit producers/traders contracted by WFP to oversee the production operation ensuring compliance with WFP requirements. 3. Perform WHS inspection to potential vendor as part of their technical assessment before inclusion in WFP roster. 4. Conduct regular warehouse inspection in WFP facilities making sure that commodity management principles are followed. 5. Conduct unannounced visits to suppliers production sites to verify the inspection activities of inspection company as per daily inspection reports/checklists. 6. Visit FDPs/CPs making sure that indoor food management/handling processes follow WFP Expectations/standards. 7. Act as focal point for food incident management support in case of any query or support needed from SC or programme unit. 8. Consolidate technical recommendations reports and follow up with supplier to implement these improvements within set time frame. 9. Provide a set of standard business support activities, where required, to contribute to the effective functioning of business operations.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in food engineering, agronomy or any related discipline.

Experience:

  • Minimum four years of relevant work experience in the field of food safety and food quality

Desired Experiences: • Basic experience analysing Food safety and food quality technical inputs (Assessment, Audit reports) • Experience in drafting technical reports following assessment/audits. • Prior knowledge in food processing/production particularly milling. • Prior knowledge in HACCP/GMP implementation in food processing units. • Basic knowledge in ISO 22000 requirements/GFSI requirements. • Experience in measuring service providers’ performance against set KPIs. • Experience in providing technical business support in corporate systems.

Language:

  • Fluency (level C) in English, Dari and Pashto.
