Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) leads international efforts to defeat hunger and to support development in member countries in the areas of agriculture, fisheries and forestry. FAO’s mandate is to raise levels of nutrition, improve agricultural productivity, better the lives of rural populations and contribute to the growth of the world economy. The FAO Liaison Office for North America, located in Washington, DC, plays a key role in advancing FAO’s mandate to end hunger, malnutrition and poverty worldwide, while achieving the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. Toward this end, the Liaison Office engages in partnership-building, policy dialogue, information sharing, and raising the visibility of the Organization in the region.

Reporting Line

The incumbent will be hired and supervised by FAO Sr. Liaison Officer, under a COF.REG contract.

Technical Focus

The Partnerships and Outreach Specialist will administer several partnerships of FAO North America, act as focal point for FAO’s work on Trade and Markets, and support outreach activities of FAO North America.

Tasks and Responsibilities

The consultant will be responsible for the following tasks. Outreach: • Act as focal point for partnerships between FAO North America and academic/research institutions and other stakeholders in the USA and Canada; • Prepare, revise and manage the implementation of Letters of Agreement, including event organization, extensions, and requesting invoices; • Organize roundtables and other events as per the office annual plan including two on the role of trade for food security and nutrition, with one on the State of Agricultural Commodity Markets (SOCO) report; • Prepare talking points for the Director/Sr. Liaison Officer for the events organized; • Provide event write-ups for the website and newsletter; • On request, attend and report on events in the US and Canada related to FAO’s mandate; • Support the communication work of the office, including the World Food Day campaign; • Assist in the implementation of FAOLOW’s outreach and advocacy strategy for strengthening the Organization’s engagement, visibility and profile in North America. Trade: • Produce bi-weekly briefs on FAO’s work on Trade and Markets, as well as recent developments in the USA and Canada related to trade in food and agriculture; • Conduct research, prepare talking points, briefs and presentations, in consultation with FAO’s Trade and Markets Division; • Perform other duties in support of FAO North America as requested by the Director of FAO North America and/or Senior Liaison Officer.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

• University degree in a field related to political science, public administration and/or agriculture development • At least 1 year of relevant and current experience in a field related to political science, public administration and/or agriculture development. • Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of one of the other FAO languages (French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian). For PSA.SBS only one language is required.
