Position: Digital Communications Intern Duration: 6 months (14 February 2022 - 14 August 2022) Time: 40 hours per week Where: Home-based

The Position:

Under the direct supervision of the Regional Communications Advisor and guided by Communications & Resource Mobilization Specialist, the Digital Communications intern will remotely support the UNFPA Regional Communications Team in delivering activities outlined in the regional communications work plan, particularly relating to online web management and social media management and analytics.

The Communications intern will support in the design and development of communications material relating to the thematic areas of sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender-based violence and harmful practices, adolescents and youth, humanitarian emergencies, population and development, as well as innovation, disability, and human rights.

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Support in the daily management of UNFPA APRO’s social media engagement channels: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube;
  • Support in digital communications delivery for the launch of UNFPA’s flagship publication - State of World Population 2022 (date TBC) and World Population Day (11 July 2022);
  • Prepare and manage a social media content schedule for UNFPA APRO with content planned for specific key international days, content with key UNFPA advocacy messages, etc.;
  • Design and develop a variety of social media content including infographics, videos, photo posts, etc.;
  • Timely update of the UNFPA APRO website including uploading of relevant publications, press releases, human-interest stories, vacancies, etc.;
  • Support in updating UNFPA APRO’s Flickr album by liaising with CO communications focal points;
  • Provide other communications-related support as required.

Your Knowledge and experience:

  • The intern should be a fresh graduate within one year or currently enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme or be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher); Preferred areas of studies are mass communications, graphic design, visual communications, media, or other similar subject at the university level;
  • Good English writing and speaking skills;
  • Experience in graphic design and video editing skills;

Learning Elements:

Upon completion of the assignment, and depending on its duration, the Intern should be able to have:

  • Increased understanding of UNFPA’s work across the region, and globally;
  • Hands-on experience in managing corporate social media channels;
  • Remote-work experience as a team member in a multicultural organization;
  • Increased knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender-based violence, young people, and population and development.
Qualifying for an Internship

Candidates for the internships are selected competitively and the profiles of the interns are matched with the needs of the organization.

Applicants to the UNFPA internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher);

(b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent);

(c) Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation;

(d) Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship programme and undertake the internship as part of this programme.

Students must have written and spoken proficiency in English; fluency in another UN language is an asset.

Financial Aspects

Interns do not receive a salary or any other form of remuneration from UNFPA. The costs associated with an intern's participation in the programme must be assumed either by the nominating institution, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students, or by the students themselves, who will have to meet living expenses as well as make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and other requirements. However, they receive a stipend to help cover basic daily expenses related to the internship, if not financially supported by any institution or programme, such as a university, government, foundation, or scholarship programme. The amount of the stipend varies according to the duty station. In addition, applicants must have medical insurance for the duration of the internship. Proof of insurance will need to be submitted before the internship begins. UNFPA does not provide medical insurance for interns.
