UNICEF has been working in Saudi Arabia since 1961 as per the Basic Cooperation Agreement between the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and UNICEF. In 2018 the UNICEF Executive Board approved the current country program document that defined the program priorities for 2019-2023. Those priority areas are child protection, early childhood development, data and knowledge generation and partnerships. Other key areas of interest to the joint cooperation include young people learning and participation including engagement in climate change.

Youth development and participation including in climate changeis a growing area of interest in KSA. To support that purpose, the UNCT has formed two task forces: Youth Task Force and Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change Task Force. Each group is responsible for) gathering evidence around the emerging issues in the country; b) identify gaps and limitations; and c) developing concrete outcomes, long-term solutions, and strategic directions. The purpose of this internship is to support UNICEF office in KSA in designing, implementing and promoting young people’s development and engagement throughout its’ work.

How can you make a difference?

The purpose of this internship is to create opportunities for young Saudis to work with the UN as interns and build their capacities as junior professionals. Under the supervision of UNICEF GAO Deputy Representative, the Youth Intern will provide technical support to those programmatic areas, work closely with the UNCT taskforces, and perform the needed tasks as assigned by UNICEF GAO.

The main tasks are:

• Support UNICEF in growing its’ young people’s portfolio in KSA including supporting the implementation of initiatives that provide increased opportunities for young people’s learning and participation;
• Assist with the design and implementation of UNICEF’s contributions to the UN Cooperation Framework for KSA (2022-2026) as it relates to young people’s issues and climate change;
• Support the management and operation of the UN Youth Task Force, chaired by UNICEF, including improving cooperation across the different UN organizations and promoting joint initiatives to deliver common results;
• Conduct desk review on young people and climate change in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia including available data, mapping of organizations/networks working in the field and identification of local/national initiatives promoting young people’s engagement in climate change especially youth led initiatives ; Lead the creation, capacity building and empowerment of youth advocates on climate change in collaboration with national, regional and global initiatives;
• Join regular meetings, public events, and other related initiatives, draft minutes and share action points with focus on advancing the youth and climate change agenda.
• Assist with other tasks and activities assigned by the Deputy Representative.

Duration: The maximum duration of the internship will be 26 weeks.

To qualify as a [champion] for every child you will have..

• University Degree in Social Sciences, Economics, Psychology or related humanitarian subjects. Advanced degree is an Asset.
• One year of relevant experience in the areas of youth, climate change and volunteering.
• Strong analytical skills, in theory and practice.
• Strong knowledge of MS Office and computer skills (MS applications, especially Word, PowerPoint and Excel).
• Strong writing and speaking skills, Fluency in Arabic and English is required.
• Communication skills: has the ability to communicate clearly and persuasively; demonstrates ability to build consensus and expresses ideas clearly.
• Strong academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records or, if not available, a reference letter from an academic supervisor.
• Results orientation: self-starter who demonstrates drive to achieve results in a timely manner and seeks solutions to any problems encountered; makes efficient use of available resources; demonstrates ability to multitask.
• Ability to work independently as well as with a team in an international, multicultural and interdisciplinary environment.
