Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all (www.unhabitat.org).The Planning, Finance and Economy Section is responsible for coordinating the Agency’s substantive, normative and operational work on various dimensions of planning, finance and economy. The Planning, Finance and Economy Section aims to develop, document, pilot/test and disseminate planning policies, norms, standards, tools, methodologies, regulatory frameworks, operating procedures, and practices at global, regional, national, and sub-national levels in support of (a) urban and territorial planning at all scales including urban design and public space design; (b) urban finance (municipal finance and urban development/projects finance); and (c) local economic development. The intern will be under the supervision of the UN-Habitat, Nairobi, Chief of Urban Planning, Finance and Economy Section.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Nairobi, Planning, Finance and Economy Section, Urban Practices Branch internship is for six (6) months.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Planning, Finance and Economy Section, the intern will: - Supporting the development of the technical and normative outputs of the Planning, Finance, and Economy Section by assisting in gathering data, analyzing, contributing to the preparation of reports and technical documents, preparation of presentations, and other dissemination materials. - Support the capacity building on a variety of planning themes. - Assist in the development of content and methodology on inclusive and sustainable urban planning and development. - Provide GIS support to planning and design inputs to ongoing planning initiatives, including citywide strategies, extension plans, and urban transformation plans. - Develop clear planning proposals, drawings, maps, and related reports as well as materials for GIS, data analysis, and visualization.

Specific Duties: - Support the development of territorial, urban planning and GIS inputs for Urban Development Policies, Strategies, Plans, and Projects. - Development of GIS training materials and workshops ¿ Support the designated, Urban Planning, Finance, and Economy Section, and Programmes in mainstreaming ecological and social resilience in the planning system, urban plans at various levels, workshops, surveys, assessments, trainings, and seminars, to steer urban and territorial planning toward climate adaptation and social inclusion goals. - Assist in the development of content and methodology on inclusive and sustainable urban planning and development. - Assist in the SDG’s localization in urban planning policy frameworks, guidelines, policies, and presentations through identification and review of relevant publications and documents, drafting and commenting on documents, and assisting in producing information materials. - Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent

Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office and Adobe) and in GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, etc. and in graphic software such as Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, AutoCAD, etc are required.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred areas of studies: Urban Planning, Geography, Environmental Sciences or Architecture or GIS technologies, or related field that is relevant for Sustainable Urban Development and Urban Planning and Design.

The candidate should have a portfolio of maps and designs of which he/she is the author.

Good cartographic skills are required.

Strong graphic representation skills, good hand drawing / sketching / mapping are an asset.

Ability on geo-processing, geo-referencing, land use classification, orto-rectification and other GIS techniques is desirable.

Previous experience in GIS, urban planning and design with direct proven experience in drawing, cartography and preparing graphical material using computer assisted design tools is an advantage.

Previous experience in developing contexts will be considered as an asset.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Knowledge of the description of the steps to follow when conducting GIS analysis (for example, a multi-criteria analysis on land suitability) is desirable.

Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative data you would gather and then analyze to produce a urban diagnostic, at the city scale is required.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
