Org. Setting and Reporting This Internship is located in the Justice and Corrections Service (JCS) of the Office of Rule ofLaw and Security Institutions, Department of Peace Operations (DPO). JCS supports the implementation of rule of law, justice and corrections mandates of United Nations peace operations. The JCS Internship is for an initial period of three months, with an opportunity for extension up to six months, depending on the needs of the Service.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns are required to work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Intern will support the substantive work of the Justice and Corrections Service, with a focus on its work in the area of criminal accountability, including provision of support to the preparation of a lessons learned study. The Intern may have the following duties and functions:

  • Assists with the implementation of a project on criminal accountability, including research, analysis and drafting of case studies and background papers and administrative coordination.
  • Assists with the coordination of and provides administrative support to meetings with internal and external partners and Member States related to criminal accountability; this includes planning, developing, producing agendas, briefing papers, summary notes, etc;
  • Assists with other policy and guidance development efforts of JCS, including by undertaking research and analysis on legal and judicial reform issues to inform guidance development;
  • Conducts research and prepares analysis on other issues and current developments related to the work of Justice and Corrections Service, both globally or assigned country settings;
  • Assist desk officers in supporting specific peace operations, with research and other related tasks;
  • Accompany JCS staff to meetings with delegates from Permanent Missions, to meetings with other Secretariat offices and to sessions of the Security Council, General Assembly and other multilateral meetings;
  • Assist with routine JCS tasks including note-taking and writing summaries /action points of internal and external meetings;
  • Assist with the preparation of public information / social media material, presentations and documents for senior JCS staff members;
  • Perform any other functions as requested by the supervisor.

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: •Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent)

•Knowledge or experience in the legal, human rights and/or international criminal justice field is desirable. •Experience supporting research and studies on rule of law, criminal justice, international law or human rights is desirable. •Knowledge of international and national processes, instruments and mechanisms related to criminal accountability for series crimes and human rights violations is desirable. •Excellent research, writing and analytical skills. •Strong computer skills, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel. •Attention to details. •Strong hands-on approach, analytical and problem-solving skills. •Well-organised, practical-minded and able to prioritize a busy and varied workload. •Independent, self-starter personality, with a demonstrated ability to support a team and successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship position fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
