Org. Setting and Reporting The duration of an ESCWA internship is normally two months on a full-time basis - this may be exceptionally extended for a maximum period of six months.
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. The United Nations accepts no responsibility for the medical insurance of the intern or costs arising from injury, illness or death that may occur during an internship. Therefore, upon awarding an internship, candidates will be required to sign a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of the conditions of service. Applicants for internship must show proof of valid medical insurance coverage to cover the full period of the internship at the duty station and provide a medical certificate of good health prior to the commencement of the internship. The United Nations accepts no responsibility for loss or damage to personal effects that may occur during the internship.
This internship is located within the Gender Justice, Population and Inclusive Development Cluster of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The intern reports directly to the appointed supervisor, and/or to senior staff of Cluster 2 with respective or delegated authority, with an overall supervision by the Chief of Cluster 2. H/She works five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of the mentioned staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. The internship certificate is awarded on the recommendation of the supervisor.
Responsibilities The intern will be responsible for carrying out the following:
1- Undertake quantitative and qualitative research on issues related to urban development; 2- Collect data from various sources and ensure reliability and validity particularly relating to SDGs; 3- Analyze and visualize data using charting tools such as Microsoft excel and/or others; 4- Summarize various documents and writing-up outcomes of data analysis; 5- Systematically follows through and retrieves, highlights and compiles information on the urban monitoring framework from a wide variety of information sources; prepares inputs on the subject as required; 6- Contribute to the web presence of the ESCWA urban development portfolio; 7- Build and maintain a mailing/contacts/outreach list for urban development; 8- Undertake a mapping of existing Voluntary Local Reviews (VLR), identify good practices and contribute to the development of a VLR regional methodology; 9- Contribute to developing the Voluntary Local Reviews of Arab cities 10- Contribute to the design development and testing of e-learning courses on urban development; 11- Prepare statistical tables and graphs and assists in the preparation of presentations and background substantive material for the projects’ related deliverables; 12- Assist in the preparation of agenda, info notes, presentations, background substantive material related to urban development meetings; 13- Translate reports, summaries and others upon request; 14- Perform other related tasks and duties as assigned.

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
1. Applicants must: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
2. Applicants must: (a) be computer literate in standard software applications. (b) have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter; and (c) have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Arabic is also a working language of ESCWA. For this post, fluency in written and spoken English is required. Fluency of French and Arabic is desirable.
