Org. Setting and Reporting This internship announcement is valid for four (4) candidates who will intern in the Visitors Services Section, Outreach Division of the Department of Global Communications in New York City. It is for an initial period of four months, with an opportunity for extension up to six months, depending on the needs of the Section and availability of the candidate.

The Outreach Division engages and educates people and their communities worldwide to encourage support for the ideals and activities of the United Nations (UN).

The Visitors Services Section interfaces directly with the general public to offer guided tours of UN Headquarters in New York and briefings with UN expert speakers, as well as a Public Inquiries counter where visitors can obtain information materials and have their queries answered.

The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days a week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Unit(s) within the Visitors Services Section to which they are assigned, although they also support the operation as a whole. Fluency in English is required to be considered as an intern candidate.

This internship is foreseen to be in person and full-time. However, the possibility of working part-time or remotely could be considered depending the nature of the tasks and at the discretion of the manager, on an exceptional basis.

Responsibilities The intern will assist one of the Units of the Visitors Services Section. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the Unit to which he/she is assigned, and the period during which he/she undertakes the internship. Interns’ responsibilities may include: - Assisting with planning and organizing outreach activities to educate the public about the UN’s work - Providing support for the organization of guided tours, briefings, and events - Conducting research on UN thematic issues - Providing general office support (drafting correspondence and other communications, setting up and maintaining files/records and databases, organizing meetings, etc.) - Assisting with taking photographs and videos to promote Visitors Services - Assisting with drafting media content for the Visitors Services Facebook and Twitter accounts - Responding to visitors’ queries in-person and in writing - Assisting with the development, implementation, and analysis of surveys on visitors’ experience - Perform other duties as required

Education Please note that to qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

or,

b. Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).

Applicants must also: - Be computer literate in standard software applications; - Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter; - Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

However, experience in drafting documents in English is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

United Nations Considerations According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity.
