Org. Setting and Reporting This position is in the Gender Unit, Office of the Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Department of Peace Operations. The internship is for an initial period of three months, starting on 17th May 2021, with an opportunity for extension up to a total period of six months, depending on the needs of the Service. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities •Assist in the implementation of the Gender Unit’s workplan to operationalize women peace and security (WPS) mandates, including working on political advocacy, strategic communications, knowledge management and capacity strengthening. •Assist in collating and analyzing data and information to promote learning and knowledge management on women peace and security in peacekeeping. •Assist in the planning and organizing of training initiatives on WPS, contribute to the development of learning and knowledge products and coordinating with peacekeeping missions when needed. •Contribute ideas for the implementation of the WPS communications strategy and plan and assist with its implementation. •Assist in collecting and developing content for WPS strategic communications products, including drafting of blog posts, articles and other digital products as well as the establishment and maintenance of a WPS Community of Practice. •Proactively contribute to ongoing research on best practices on women’s leadership and participation in peace and political processes in select peacekeeping missions, and coordination of related policy work. •Perform any other duties as requested by the supervisor.

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and gender issues and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individual of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Explain how you meet the criterion and why you are the best candidate to be considered. Explain your motivation to work with Gender Unit and specifically on Women Peace and Security. Languages Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; knowledge in French is highly desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. Solid writing and analytical skills, experience in research, with focus on gender and Women, Peace and Security are desirable. Experience with standard software applications (including Powerpoint, Excel and Word), are desirable. Ability to coordinate and multi-task in a fast-paced environment is also desirable.
