Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Office of Administration of Justice (OAJ), the incumbent reports to the Principal Registrar. This internship is for a minimum of three months and up to six months. The programme is normally full-time, i.e. an intern is expected to work five days per week (9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.).

Our Interns work as full team members, pursue projects designed to make a significant difference in OAJ and have opportunities to learn about the United Nations overall. (Total of 35 hours per week). Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the business unit to which he/she is assigned and the period during which he/she will undertake the internship.

The Office of Administration of Justice is an independent office responsible for the overall coordination of the formal system of administration of justice and contributing to its functioning in a fair, transparent, and efficient manner. In this regard, the Office provides substantive, technical and administrative support to the United Nations Dispute Tribunal and the United Nations Appeals Tribunal through their Registries; assists staff members and their representatives in pursuing claims and appeals through the Office of Staff Legal Assistance; and provides assistance, as appropriate, to the Internal Justice Council.

Interns learning opportunities: OAJ is seeking highly motivated graduate students who wish to gain professional experience in an international organization. During this three to six-month internship, Interns will have opportunities to broaden their experience and knowledge about the analysis and application of statistical procedures to business data of a legal department.

It offers a practical educational experience and allows interns to work in a multicultural, intergovernmental organization.

Responsibilities Interns perform tasks under the overall supervision of the Executive Director of the Office of Administration of Justice. Interns assist in conducting legal research and analyzing legal issues and data. Interns also assist in drafting various legal documents and communications, support information and knowledge management practices, and perform other duties as required. Assist with:

  • The compilation of workflow data generated by the Court Case Management E-filing system.
  • Reviewing existing data analysis and evolving data analysis needs.
  • Developing and testing hypotheses and exploratory data analysis.
  • Data analysis and preparing figures, tables and visualizations.
  • Assists in updating dashboards created in Power BI
  • The specific research topics will be defined based on discussion between the intern and the responsible officer and should be mutually beneficial for both the intern and UN.

Before completing this internship, the intern will prepare a brief report and make a presentation on the experience gained and any potential substantive research paper that this internship might lead to. The intern may also be asked to assist in the day-to-day work of the division if required. The intern is expected to familiarize him/herself, to a limited extent, with the administrative work of the division and other tasks that are typical of UN organizations.

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

  • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation;

  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.

For this internship, applicants should be pursuing their studies, preferably in applied statistics, data science, business statistics, or other fields focusing on quantitative empirical analysis and being computer literate in standard software applications. Proficiency with data analysis using statistical software (preferably R) is required; experience with Tableau or Power BI is desirable. Familiarity with SharePoint is an asset but not a prerequisite.

Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or not currently in the United States on a nonimmigrant visa status will be required to obtain a G-4 visa. If already in the United States of America on another non-immigrant visa status other than G-4, interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization, allowing them to undertake the internship.
