Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response efforts. OCHA's mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions.

This job opening announcement broadcasts an internship opportunity with OCHA in New York. The intern, under the general guidance of a primary supervisor, shall be assigned to Evaluation and Oversight Section (EOS).

This internship shall be based in New York, U.S.A., and the intern will be under the general guidance and direct supervision of OCHA-New York supervisor. The internship is being offered for a minimum period of three (3) months, with a possibility of extension up to a maximum period of six (6) months, beginning at a mutually agreed time.

Responsibilities The Evaluation and Oversight Section manages evaluations of OCHA's work and of the wider humanitarian response, and monitors the implementation of recommendations from these evaluations, as well as from audits, reviews and other assessments. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

•Researches, analyses and presents information gathered from diverse sources on assigned topics/issues. •Support the planning and organization of meetings and briefings. •Drafts meeting notes, background papers and other documents, undertaking research in thematic areas if necessary. •Help design various information materials, including publication covers, presentation templates, flyers, infographics and social media visuals. •Proposing ideas and solutions for better management of the Section’s information and knowledge products. •Identifying opportunities for OCHA’s evaluation products to reach a wider audience. •Assisting in reviewing project documents, reports, assessments and evaluation. •Contributes to the preparation of various written documents, e.g. drafts sections of evaluations, background papers, etc. •Maintaining and uploading documents on team website. •Collaborates with programme/project managers on performance monitoring. •Assists in the Section’s work on evaluation and oversight. •Performs other related duties as required.

Competencies - Professionalism: Knowledge and understanding of humanitarian, emergency relief assistance and related humanitarian issues. Ability to develop sources and conduct data collection using various methods. Conceptual analytical and evaluative skills to conduct research and analysis, including familiarity with and experience in the use of various research sources, including electronic sources on the internet, intranet and other databases. - Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors’ language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrate openness in sharing information and keeping people informed. - Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; solicits input by genuinely valuing others' ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others; places team agenda before personal agenda; supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position; shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

•Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); •Be computer literate in standard software applications. •Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and •Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

The University degree must be in the area of political science, social science, international studies, public administration, economics, engineering, earth sciences or in a related field.

Work Experience Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, the field of study should be closely related to the type of internship you are applying for is required.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
