Org. Setting and Reporting The position is located in the Office of Military Affairs (OMA), Department of Peace Operations (DPO). The incumbent report to the Capability Development Officer (Gender Specialist) and other Desk Officers as required.

The Department of Peace Operations (DPO) serves as a center of excellence for peace operations, responsible for preventing, responding to and managing conflict and sustaining peace in countries where peace operations under its purview are deployed, and provides support to other entities on peace and security issues. The Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) focuses primarily on five action areas in international peace and security, ensuring sound analysis and early warning, preventing conflict and engaging in peacemaking, managing political crises and violent conflicts, sustaining peace, and enhancing partnerships. The Department's mandate is to prevent and resolve conflict through inclusive political solutions.

The internship is for a period of six months depending on the needs of each office. We are targeting to hire 2 interns who will serve 6 months each, one after the other. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Responsibilities Responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to: - Assist in the implementation of the Gender Military Strategy and the Office of Military Affairs’ workplan to operationalize women peace and security (WPS) mandates, including working on political advocacy, strategic communications, knowledge management and capacity strengthening. - (Assist the Office of Military Affairs in the development, activities and workplan to operationalize the Women, Peace and Security mandate (1325), and develop a Gender Strategy for the military component in UN Peace Operations; including political advocacy, strategic communications, knowledge and capacity building. - Assist in collating and analyzing data and information to promote learning and knowledge management on women peace and security in peacekeeping and the military component. - Contribute to the implementation of the WPS communications effort for Office of Military Affairs; including identification of the target audience. Assist in the development of content for strategic communications products, included drafting of blog posts, articles and other digital projects. - Proactively contribute and support ongoing research on best practices regarding leadership and participation of women in the military component, in peace and political processes in selected peacekeeping missions. - Coordination and support to related policy and guidance work. - Support the OMA Gender Team with reporting responsibilities, through written inputs into reports and other documents and support to presentation preparation - Attend meetings as an observer. - Manage meeting agendas and draft meeting notes. - Assists with special projects as assigned. - Perform any other duties as requested by the supervisor.

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). Interested candidates must be pursuing or pursued their degree in areas related to this Job Opening. In addition, interested candidates must: - Be computer literate in standard software applications including MS Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point); - Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and, - Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English is required for this internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Solid writing and analytical skills, experience in research, with focus on gender and Women, Peace and Security are desirable. Experience with standard software applications (including Powerpoint, Excel and Word), are desirable. Ability to coordinate and multi-task in a fast-paced environment is also desirable.
