Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The Sustainable United Nations facility (Sustainable UN, SUN) was established by UNEP in 2008 with the aim of enabling the UN agencies to achieve climate neutrality and environmental sustainability. Sustainable UN coordinates the Greening the Blue campaign that includes the annual environmental inventories of the UN system on greenhouse gas emissions, waste and water management practices and quantities, as well as environmental sustainability initiatives. Over 60 UN entities take part of the annual reporting cycle of the ‘Greening the Blue’ report. Sustainable UN also works with individual agencies to develop emissions reduction plans, and provides information to UN staff on how they can reduce their impacts via Environmental Management Systems (EMS).

The Economy Division/ SUN internship is for six (6) months. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.

Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Sustainable UN coordinator, and in close collaboration with SUN staff members, the intern will: •Provide support to the compilation of the UN greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, waste and water management data from UN entities; •Process data to assess emissions reduction trends in UN organisations overtime •Assist UNEP in the calculation of GHG emissions data specific to the Geneva office as part of UNEP’s commitment with the Swiss led 2050Today initiative •Attend events related to the swiss led 2050Today initiative to show UN internal sustainability efforts •Assist in estimating proxies for greenhouse gas emissions and waste in terms of consumption/generation per area or per capita; •Provide assistance in the day to day work regarding the implementation of UN’s Sustainability Strategy Phase 1 (environmental sustainability in the area of management); •Organize and participate of team meetings and take notes as requested; •Help the Sustainable UN team maintain data and best practices from UN organizations with regards to internal environmental sustainability and ensure the information is well classified and easy to trace. •Help the Sustainable UN team maintain its query tracking system for assistance to Un organisations in environmental sustainability

Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

•Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); •Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first level university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); •Have graduated with a university degree.

The applicant should also: •Be computer literate in standard software applications; •Have experience doing data analysis and data visualization is desired •Have high attention to detail and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize competing tasks, are needed •Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Applicants must have an environmental background from -preferably- courses on environmental science, or engineering. Also preferred criteria are a good knowledge of: •carbon accounting and emission reduction practices •waste management and/or waste water management

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.

NOTE: "Fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.
