Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

The Green Growth Knowledge Partnership (GGKP) is hosted by UNEP, in partnership with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). These organizations serve as the joint host of the GGKP Secretariat (www.greengrowthknowledge.org) on behalf of the GGKP Steering Committee (UNEP, GGGI, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, United Nations Industrial Development Organization, and the World Bank). The GGKP is a global network of over 90 international organizations, research institutes, and non-governmental organizations focused on promoting a green economy transition by:

  • identifying major knowledge gaps in green growth theory and practice and addressing these gaps through the promotion of collaboration and coordinated research; and
  • using world-class knowledge management and communication tools to provide practitioners, policymakers, and other experts with opportunities to access, share, and utilize green growth policy analysis, guidance, information, and data.

The Economy Division/ GGKP internship is for six (6) months.

Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of various programme leads in the GGKP and the overall guidance of the Head of the GGKP Secretariat, and based on the interests of the intern as well as the needs of the team at the time of the internship, the intern will engage in the following activities under one or more of the GGKP workstreams:

  • Green Industry Platform o Support the management of national and regional networks of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) supporting organisations and related communication activities; o Support the development and deployment of online tools and solutions to help SMEs easily access resource efficiency support and implement targeted actions; o Identify and review resource efficiency knowledge products (technical guidance, case studies and training) and support services (training, technical assistance and financing) for SMEs; o Research resource efficiency-based initiatives being delivered by leading organizations to support the development of a global initiative mapping and analysis project.

  • Research Programme o Identify, assess, collect and categorize green growth resources to be part of the GGKP resource library, including green growth research, data and case studies; o Identify and collect information on projects being carried out by GGKP partners and other leading organizations in the field of green growth; o Collect and draft, as appropriate, meeting summaries, background notes and abstracts of green growth research and analysis; o Support the GGKP office in organizing research-related meetings and web contents.

  • Communications and Community Development o Draft, edit and promote digital and printed promotional and informational materials on green growth topics; o Contribute to the development of GGKP’s online community space, the Green Forum, by providing support in drafting, curating posts, moderating discussion groups and updating thematic pages.

Establishes and maintains productive partnerships with clients by gaining their trust and respect. Identifies clients’ needs and matches them to appropriate solutions. Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems. Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects. Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this Internship position fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.

Assessment Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
