Org. Setting and Reporting The internship is located in the Office of the Director of the Economic Cooperation and Trade Division, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe based in Geneva. UNECE supports its 56 member States across the Pan-European region in their transition to a more circular economy. ECTD focusses on the contribution of trade and economic cooperation to this transition.

Against the background of the outcomes of the 69th Commission, thematic areas expected of the 2021/2022 programme of work, during which the internship would take place, include,

Fostering the contribution of trade and economic cooperation to a transition to a more circular economy by:

•Making supply chains more traceable, and hence sustainable and circular, e.g. in textiles and other particularly resource intensive sectors. •Integrating circularity into public procurement criteria, e.g. for sustainable/green/innovation-enhancing public procurement. •Fostering the reduction and reuse of waste, e.g. food waste/loss, electronic waste tracking, waste-to-energy public private partnerships. •Promoting the use of innovation and new technologies, e.g. for supply chain transparency and traceability. •Harnessing the power of standards and regulatory cooperation.

The intern is expected to contribute to the work of the Economic Cooperation and Trade Division as follows:

Contributions to UNECE’s core interlinked functions

•International policy dialogue, e.g. contribute to the conceptualization and organization of meetings, liaise with speakers and participants. •Normative work to develop standards and recommendations, e.g. contribute to the drafting and development of normative instruments, support discussion/negotiation processes. •Capacity-building, e.g. contribute to the design of trainings, the organization of seminars, the drafting of advisory memos.

Ad hoc tasks include

•Drafting out-reach material, e.g. news items, press releases, social media content. •Contribution to the drafting of speeches for senior staff, e.g. Director of ECTD, Executive Secretary of UNECE. •Support to the development of background memos/research.

Education International law or economics, development studies, international relations or international management are required

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Russian and/or French is an asset.

United Nations Considerations According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.

In this context, all internationally recruited staff members shall be required to move periodically to discharge new functions within or across duty stations under conditions established by the Secretary-General.
