Org. Setting and Reporting The internship position is located in the Programme Management and Development Unit (PDMU), Research and Analysis Branch (RAB), Division of Policy Analysis and Public Affairs (DPA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Vienna (Austria). The envisaged start of the internship is in March 2021 for a duration of minimum 3 months with possibility of extension to a maximum of 6 months subject to the needs of the office and the availability of the intern.

PDMU researches the dynamics of illegal markets, such as global drug markets, and illicit financial flows from drugs and crime. The research focuses on illicit market dynamics, such as under COVID-19, and on the analysis and estimation of flows of illicit goods and services.

Internships with Offices of the United Nations Secretariat are UNPAID and full-time, i.e. 5 days per week (40 hours).

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.

Responsibilities Responsibilities:

The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to:

•Assist in the creation and maintaining of databases;

•Assist in the statistical analysis of data related to drugs and crime;

•Assist in analyzing data to define trends, patterns and flows of illicit goods and services such as illicit drugs;

•Present the results in graphs, tables and maps, as well as develop presentations on the key findings of the research;

•Carry out other tasks related to the implementation of the programme, as requested.

Education •Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). (OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);

•Be computer literate in standard software applications;

•Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.”

In addition, for this particular internship

-Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Power Point as well as working knowledge in a statistical software package, preferably R, are required. -Studies in the fields of social sciences, economics or criminology are required. -Familiarity with crime research (or comparable study area) is an asset.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
