Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Information Management Unit, Department of Peacebuilding and Political Affairs (DPPA) and Department of Peace Operations (DPO). Under the overall supervision of the Senior Programme Officer in the ODCSS, the incumbent reports directly to the Chief, DPPA-DPO Information Management Unit.

The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours), with supervision and support of a staff member. We also consider part-time internships.

Responsibilities Our interns work as full members of our team, pursue projects that are designed to make a significant difference in the whole department, and have opportunities to learn about the United Nations overall. We offer internship opportunities in five broad areas. Experience in Political Affairs, Human Rights or Humanitarian and experience working with clients using a user-centric design process are strongly encouraged.

The intern will support the implementation of the Secretary General’s Data Strategy, supporting the tracking of use cases, ensuring relevant meetings take place, and coordinating between relevant personnel to gather relevant information.

Responsibilities

- Understand and support the implementation of the Secretary General’s Data Strategy

- Coordinate with multiple stakeholders to schedule meetings, gather feedback, and keep meeting minutes

- Support and upkeep of list of data strategy use cases, fill out relevant documentation

- Respond to questions about data strategy response as needed

- Coordinate and support data training and seminar activities as needed

- Perform ad-hoc analysis and present results in a clear manner

Desired qualifications

- Background in data analytics or data policy

- Coordination, scheduling and speaking skills

- Strong writing and communication skills in English required, knowledge of additional UN languages desirable

- A passion for empirical investigation and for answering hard questions with data in a clear and precise way

- Experience with or understanding of Microsoft Outlook, or willingness to learn

- Experience with MS Power BI, Tableau or any other similar self-service analytics toolsets is desirable.

Education Applicants to the United Nations Internship Programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

(1) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,

(2) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).

We are open to a broad range of educational backgrounds. Typically, our interns are pursuing studies in the following areas: Political Science, Social Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Systems / Technology, Economics, Machine Learning, Data Visualization and Analytics, Web Analytics, Graphic Design, Web Design, User Interface Design, Human-computer Interaction, Digital Marketing or a relevant field.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.
