Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the agency for human settlements mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities (www.unhabitat.org). This internship will be to support UN-Habitat’s communication in the Land, Housing and Shelter Section. The Land, Housing and Shelter Section (LHSS) provides support to the development of norms and standards in conventions, declarations, regulatory frameworks, agreements, guidelines, codes of practice, and other standard-setting instruments, at global, regional, and national level. Normative work also includes the support for the implementation of these instruments at the policy level, i.e. their integration into legislation, policies, and development plans, and to their implementation at the programme level.

The practice group concentrates the skills of specific practice in one coherent area. By being able to better manage the practice group’s skills, the quality of performance is easier to sustain. They also provide the opportunity to focus and present the skills of the practice to clients and prospective clients more forcefully and cohesively thereby raising the profile of the group’s practice, both within and outside the organization, and making the skills more visible to others in the Organization. The intern will be under the supervision of the UN-Habitat, Nairobi, Land, Housing and Shelter Section (LHSS), Associate Programme Manager.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Nairobi, Land, Housing and Shelter Section (LHSS) internship is for six (6) months.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the direct supervision of the Associate Programme Manager, the intern will: 1. Knowledge management, monitoring, and reporting - Assist in regular communication between requested groups. - Collate knowledge discussed in team/committee meetings. - Assist in keeping track of all communication and deliverables to be submitted. - Support in keeping track of ad hoc requests. - Monitor implementation of LHS mandates.

2. Communities of Practice Coordination - Assist in setting up regular meetings with the Umbrella group. - Support in ensuring committees stick to mandates and close any gaps in understanding. - Analyze toolkits and execution. - Background support for meetings for stakeholders outside the section (branch, division, agency-wide).

3. Regional Office Support and Coordination - Document projects that undertaken through regular meetings. - Ensure guidelines are being followed. - Relay information on the LHS mandates, norms and standards. - Build strategic communications system in order to keep track of grassroot level activities.

4. Project Review Committee Support - Assist in examining project proposals before final submission. - Make recommendations to proposer before submission. - Facilitate project document review by the section.

Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems. Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects. Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred areas of studies: Regional/Urban Planning, Policy Formulation, Urban Economy and Finance, International Development, Slum upgrading, and Communication.

Background and experience in Analytical Reading, Communications, Documentation, Urban Affairs, Sustainable Development, Political Science, Psychology, Project Management, Administration, or International relations would be an advantage.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Ability to facilitate communication with a large team in order to keep track of deliverables and coordinate the collection of outputs is required.

Ability to quickly review documents, project notes, problem analyses, guidelines etc. synthesize and present information relevant to land housing and shelter is required.

Ability to independently organize your work, monitor your workplan, reprioritize tasks and meet deadlines is desirable.

Education or experience in the urban sector is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.
