Org. Setting and Reporting The Office of Human Resources (OHR) is seeking passionate young interns who are innovative doers and thinkers and interested in making a difference for a better world. The Office of Human Resources (OHR) is seeking prospective interns from the unrepresented countries in the United Nations workforce who come from Andorra; Angola; Belize; Brunei Darussalam; Democratic People's Republic of Korea; Equatorial Guinea; Kiribati; Lao People's Democratic Republic; Libya; Liechtenstein; Marshall Islands; Monaco; Nauru; Palau; Qatar; Saint Lucia; Sao Tome and Principe; Timor-Leste; Tuvalu; United Arab Emirates and Vanuatu.

These remote internship opportunities are in the Global Strategy and Policy Division (GSPD) of the Office of Human Resources (OHR), Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance (DMSPC). GSPD serves as the central strategic authority for all matters pertaining to the management of human resources. It ensures that the Organization has the strategies, policies, frameworks and tools to attract, develop and retain a talented and diverse global workforce. It nurtures a culture of engagement, leadership and results. It provides policy, strategic and thought leadership, innovations and solutions for the end-to-end management of talent: from strategic workforce planning; talent acquisition; organizational and staff development and growth; performance management; including Organization-wide mobility and appropriate duty of care, for all Secretariat staff.

The Staffing, Diversity and Outreach Section plays a vital role in bringing staff of high caliber into the Organization. It develops strategies and initiatives aimed at building a diverse workforce across the Organization and coordinates Organization-wide efforts to increase geographical and regional diversity across all departments, offices and missions. It supports the Secretary-General’s system-wide strategy on gender parity and promotes access to opportunities by persons with disabilities by undertaking targeted outreach campaigns to draw upon the broadest pool of candidates for Secretariat positions. The integration of social media platforms, including social networking tools—such as Facebook, Twitter, Weibo and WeChat—forms a critical component of the section’s communications strategies.

The intern/s will support the communication and outreach efforts highlighting the transformational initiatives underway in human resources towards an agile, diverse and accountable Organization.

The internship is for a minimum period of two months with the possibility for extension up to six months contingent on availability of the candidate.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work up to five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Communications/Outreach intern may be responsible for the following duties:

•Leverages social media and other tools, such as local or regional job boards, local and regional media to source viable applicants from designated countries. •Assists with recruitment outreach efforts in designated countries. •Works with local partners to promote interest in working for the UN to specific professional communities. •Identifies and contacts talent communities, though cold calling, email campaigns and social media posts to advertise open and future job opportunities for the UN. •Interfaces with local talent agencies to undertake campaigns to talent communities (e.g. at universities, associations, NGOs, private sector). •Identifies, researches, drafts and edits content (text, photos, documents and multimedia) for online publication (website and social media) in line with UN media guidelines. •Monitors and reports on social media analytics. •Assists with live coverage at global events for drawing attention to the UN as an employer. •Participates in planning and implementing special events locally in the unrepresented countries to draw attention to the UN as an employer. •Prepares local labor market analysis and draft strategies to target viable talent in designated countries. •Takes on other special projects as assigned.

On completion of the internship, the successful candidate will have gained:

•An excellent understanding of the UN Secretariat, its structure and its ongoing human resources management reform; •Valuable experience in human resources; •Knowledge of the challenges of human resources management in a multicultural environment and in an inter-governmental organization; •An understanding of staff selection processes, especially recruitment and outreach strategies; •Drafting and writing skills for public information and communications in an international context; •Extensive exposure to managers and staff members of the UN Secretariat and the UN System.

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in journalism, communication, media studies, international relations, social sciences or a related field; or (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent) in one of the subjects specified above.

Applicants must also: - Be computer literate in standard software applications; be proficiency in social media platforms; - Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; - Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Experience in conducting data analysis, including visualizing and validating data and social media is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
