Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS), an independent office reporting to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly. OIOS adds value by providing world-wide audit, investigation, inspection, programme monitoring and evaluation services to all bodies affiliated with the United Nations Secretariat. The Executive Office supports the Office of the Under-Secretary-General in the fulfillment of their responsibilities for the administration and management of OIOS.

The internship, based in New York City, is UNPAID and full-time. The internship is initially for three months and can be extended up to six months, working five days per week under the supervision of a Chief of Unit in the department or office to which they are assigned. Internships may be undertaken on the basis of flexible working arrangements. The intern is required to work the equivalent of three months on a full-time basis within a six-month period.

Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Executive Officer and working closely with the team, the intern will be expected to: 1) Support with data collection and OIOS’ HR reporting and analysis needs while coordinating the development of improved HR reporting within the Executive Office; 2) Draft supporting documents, such as Standard Operating Procedures for reporting, a regular reporting plan/timeline, report templates and related documents to facilitate the implementation of the improved reporting practices; 3) Support with different Organizational and OIOS initiatives, including the HR Workforce, gender parity, geographical representation and inclusivity initiatives; 4) Create Excel tables/reports, surveys and Power Point Presentations; 5) Provide administrative support to OIOS recruitment activities; 6) Draft HR, travel and administration related communications on behalf of the Executive Office, such as broadcasts to all staff, or individual responses to client queries; 7) Provide administrative support for daily office operations in the EO; and 8) Perform other duties as required.

Technological awareness: Keeps abreast of available technology; understands applicability and limitations of technology to the work of the office; shows willingness to learn new technology.

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (Bachelor's, Master's, Ph.D., or equivalent) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation; (d) if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, they must have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree; (e) graduated from or studying in the programme of public information, communication, information systems and communication technology, languages, social sciences, or a related field is desirable; (f) be computer literate in standard software applications, in particular related to social media, proficiency in HTML, CSS and/or Drupal is desirable; (g) have a demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and (h) have a demonstrated ability to interact successfully with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to be tolerant of differing opinions and views. .

Work Experience Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the Programme. Are you a student in a Bachelor’s (final year), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have you completed a degree and are able to commence an internship within a year of graduation? Is your field of study closely related to the type of internship you are applying for? Will you be able to cover the cost of travel including visa, accommodation and other living expenses for the duration of the internship?

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or not currently in the United States on a nonimmigrant visa status will be required to obtain a G-4 visa. If already in the United States of America on another non-immigrant visa status other than G-4, interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization, allowing them to undertake the internship.
