Contract

This is a Consultancy contract. More about Consultancy contracts.

UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.

Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.

And we never give up.

For every child, hope

The PFP Market Knowledge Unit provides insights and knowledge to UNICEF National Committees and fundraising country offices, as well as other units within PFP.

The PFP Communication and Marketing Section provides UNICEF National Committees and fundraising country offices with guidance and technical support for their public outreach efforts, including individual donations, corporate engagement, and brand and communications. This involves providing market research services covering opinion surveys and market measurements.

According to the Global Humanitarian Assistance Report, private sector humanitarian funding amounted to $6.4bn in 2020 – and UNICEF has raised on our side $278m ORE – but we have little intelligence about where that private sector funding is coming from / targeted at.

When a CO like Lebanon, Sudan or Venezuela reaches out to PFP Emergency unit for support, e.g., to work on a briefing, content, or proposal, beyond looking at past donations (which markets, which audiences, in emergencies and development) against the HAC, there is no mapping of the income flow in order to understand how the sector has already reacted. And more specifically, there is no mapping on how other organizations have benefitted from donations.

How can you make a difference?

The Emergency Unit at PFP would like to see if we could add a new layer of competitor intelligence to the emergency fundraising.

The focus would be on primary donors (i.e., market), secondary donors (i.e., donor/partner) and funding recipients (i.e., country office), as well as clusters if possible (e.g., WASH).

An emergency lens would be used rather than a market lens.

The research will inform National Committees and PSFR COs about potential opportunities that they can look into to increase their emergency fundraising.

MAIN TASKS

In close coordination with the MKU Market Research Specialist and the Emergency Fundraising Specialist, three key primary tasks:

  • 1. Build knowledge to inform humanitarian funding strategy (where to play). Ideally only focusing on ORE (emergency) type of donations. However, this might be very difficult to differentiate with ORR donations.

  • 2. Identify primary (country, e.g., Germany) and secondary donors (names, sectors, industries, e.g., IKEA) that donate to a) competitors (e.g., Red Cross) in the country and to b) area of programme (e.g., WASH, health, nutrition)

  • 3. Identify donors that donate (or would be interested to donate) in-kind contributions for humanitarian programming in the country.

For definition purpose:

  • Recipient country (e.g., Syria)
  • Organization (e.g., Red Cross)
  • Secondary donor (e.g., IKEA)
  • Country of origin (e.g., Sweden)
  • Programs area (e.g., WASH)
  • Amount (e.g., $1m)
  • Non-Financial support (e.g. CIK)
