This is a Consultancy contract. More about Consultancy contracts.

**OVERVIEW** ------------ Parent Sector : Field Office Duty Station: Bangkok Job Family: Culture Type of contract : Non Staff Duration of contract : From 7 to 11 months Recruitment open to : External candidates Application Deadline (Midnight Bangkok Time) : 23-MAY-2021 UNESCO Core Values: Commitment to the Organization, Integrity, Respect for Diversity, Professionalism **OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST** ----------------------------------------- The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Office in Bangkok is looking for a contractor to support its projects “Integrating intangible cultural heritage in non-formal and informal education in Thailand” and “Teaching and learning with intangible cultural heritage in schools in Asia and the Pacific”. **Background** Education can play a valuable role in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage (ICH). This is why the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage includes a reference to ‘transmission, particularly through formal and non-formal education’, as part of the proposed safeguarding measures (Article 2.3). In the context of the Convention, intergenerational transmission is a dynamic interactive process through which intangible cultural heritage is constantly recreated. The Convention calls on States Parties to ‘ensure recognition of, respect for, and enhancement of the intangible cultural heritage in society’ through education programmes (Article 14). Similarly, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development advocates ‘promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development’ as an important target (target 4.7) to achieve Goal 4 on quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all. Intangible cultural heritage can provide context-specific content and pedagogy for education programmes and thus act as a leverage to increase the relevance of education and improve learning outcomes. Recognising the benefits that the integration of living heritage brings both for its safeguarding and for the achievement of international educational objectives for peace and sustainable development, the Convention’s Intergovernmental Committee at its twelfth session approved ‘Safeguarding intangible cultural heritage in formal and non-formal education’ as the second funding priority under the Convention (Decision 12.COM 6). Accordingly, the governing bodies of the Convention have encouraged contributors to consider the possibility of supporting the implementation of the Convention through voluntary supplementary contributions to the Intangible Cultural Heritage Fund for this new intersectoral programme. Long Description ---------------- The UNESCO Office in Bangkok has been dealing with the integration of ICH in formal education in Asia and the Pacific for the past few years and now is at the stage to consolidate the existing materials and lessons learned into a self-paced online learning course that target teachers in Asia and the Pacific region. While methodologies for integrating ICH in formal education have begun to be developed and are being introduced in a number of countries, the potential to safeguard living heritage through non-formal education is yet to be tackled in a comprehensive and systematic manner. UNESCO Bangkok has therefore begun a project to explore the important connection between ICH and education, aiming to strengthen the safeguarding and transmission of ICH and improve the relevance of education programmes with a view to promote community well-being, social cohesion and sustainable development. Long Description ---------------- **Assignment** Within the framework of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the two ongoing projects “Safeguarding intangible cultural heritage in non-formal and informal education in Thailand” and “Teaching and learning with intangible cultural heritage in schools in Asia and the Pacific”, under the authority of the Director of UNESCO Bangkok, and the direct supervision of the Chief of Culture Unit of UNESCO Bangkok, the contractor will undertake the following activities: **A.
