Background and Rationale** The United Nations has proclaimed [a Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030)](http://www.oceandecade.org/) to support efforts to reverse the cycle of decline in ocean health and gather ocean stakeholders worldwide behind a common framework that will ensure ocean science can fully support countries in creating improved conditions for sustainable development of the Ocean. The Ocean Decade calls for Decade Actions from diverse stakeholders. [The UNESCO/IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC)](http://ioc-westpac.org/) is the regional body of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission ([IOC](http://www.unesco.org/new/en/natural-sciences/ioc-oceans/)/UNESCO) for the Western Pacific and its adjacent areas. Its mission is to advance ocean knowledge in order to assist Member States in the conservation and sustainable development of ocean, seas and marine resources. Meanwhile, The Sub-Commission WESTPAC also assists the IOC to coordinate regional engagement in the [UN Ocean Decade](https://www.oceandecade.org/). Over the last 10 year, more and more small islands in the region have become hotspots of tourism. This tourism industry has brought not only positive impact to local community (i.e., increase local revenue), but also, if not managed well, negative impact to natural ecosystems (i.e., increasing in plastic litter, nutrient loading, bacterial pathogen etc.). We are seeking a consultant from Indonesia, who is qualified to conduct a case study of the impacts of tourism industry on seagrass ecosystem services in a representative small island-Pari island, and come up with actional recommendations for relevant local and provincial government agencies, as well as tourism operators. This study is conducted as part of efforts in formulating a regional action for the UN Ocean Decade catalyzing transformative ocean science solutions to sustainable development. The incumbent can work remotely. **Key Duties and Responsibilities** ----------------------------------- **2. Key Duties and Responsibilities** Under the overall authority of the Director of the UNESCO Regional Bureau for the Asia and Pacific, and the direct supervision of the Head of the WESTPAC Office, the incumbent shall carry out a desktop and fieldwork about the Pari island, including 1. 1. map the current coverage of seagrass ecosystem and its changes from a particular year using drone or remote sensing. 2. identify marine litter (composition &quantity) using quadrants and transects in area of seagrass meadow, tourist site and conservation site. 3. develop a framework of questionnaire and carry out a study on stakeholders perception on seagrass ecosystem services. 4. come up with recommendations for local and provincial government agencies, as well as tourist operators 5. submit to UNESCO a report on the study of the impacts of tourism industry on seagrass ecosystem services in the Pari island *In line with UNESCO’s overall gender mainstreaming strategy, the consultant is expected to integrate a gender perspective in all activities and apply gender mainstreaming concepts whenever feasible.* **COMPETENCIES (Core / Managerial)** ------------------------------------ Accountability (C) Communication (C) Innovation (C) Knowledge sharing and continuous improvement (C) Planning and organizing (C) Results focus (C) Teamwork (C) **-** ----- For detailed information, please consult the [UNESCO Competency Framework](https://en.unesco.org/sites/default/files/competency_framework_e.pdf). **QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILL REQUIRED** ------------------------------------- - At least 10 years international experience in developing international initiatives. - Advanced Degree (or equivalent experience) in the field of ocean science with excellent organizational skills. - Good understanding of global and regional and national actors in this domain. - Good knowledge of Word, PowerPoint, Excel. - Excellent command of English. - Excellent attention to detail, proactive, diligent, willing to learn, dedicated and responsible. - Highly organized, be able to work on several tasks simultaneously, be able to prioritize and to utilize efficient time management skills. - Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to collaborate and work in a team in a multicultural environment. **APPLICATION PROCESS** ----------------------- Interested individuals are invited to submit to UNESCO Bangkok Office the specific requirements through [careers.unesco.org](https://career2.successfactors.eu/sfcareer/jobreqcareer?jobId=10801&company=unesco).
