Agency Background:

Founded in 1933, The International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitative assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. IRC Tucson provides a wide range of services to refugees in all stages of resettlement and seeks to promote each person’s search for self-sufficiency.

Position Description:

Immigration Interns will have the opportunity to work with Immigration staff, IRC staff, and volunteers to assist refugee and non-citizen community members with applications for lawful permanent residence, asylum, and other immigration petitions necessary for clients to receive and legal residency in the United States and reunite with family members. Immigration Interns will also work in our Afghan Placement and Assistance (APA) program to assist Afghan parolees seeking asylum in Tucson.

Responsibilities:

- Set-up and conduct intake and immigration interviews with assistance from an interpreter and immigration staff. - Prepare and complete immigration applications and petitions on behalf of refugees, asylees, and immigrants for submission to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). - Conduct follow-up, including written and telephone communication with USCIS and responding to requests for further evidence and inquiries. - Conduct client interviews and prepare declarations. - Maintain case files by copying, faxing, and inputting information in immigration case management database. - Notify clients of USCIS interviews, ensuring they have immunization records, photos, and other required documents complete and available for the interview. - Conduct community outreach and legal orientations for refugee and immigrant population. - Fulfill any other obligations required of you by the institution granting college credits for the internship, and any other responsibilities assigned to you by your supervisor.

Qualifications

- Enrollment in a post-secondary degree program complimentary to immigration law.

- Excellent time management skills. - Strong cross-cultural communication skills, proficiency in another language is preferred. - Strong organization skills and attention to detail. - An understanding and ability to maintain confidentiality regarding client information.

- Strong desire to learn about refugee resettlement and immigration issues.
