This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the Unit coordinator, the UNV will undertake the following tasks:

  • Gather information and report on the human rights and protection situation in a designated geographical area, including through close cooperation with other United Nations actors and the community;
  • Keep the supervisor regularly informed on developments concerning the human rights and protection situation in area of responsibility (AOR);
  • Contributes to the integration of human rights in the mission’s protection of civilians (PoC) efforts and, where relevant, coordinates such efforts, including by, inter-alia, mapping and reporting protection risks, early warning, advising UN uniformed personnel on human rights issues during the conduct of their operations, and participating in or coordinating Joint Protection Team missions, as required
  • Ensure, coordinate and supervise the timely entry of accurate and verified human rights cases into an established database; conduct quality control and deliver statistics and trend reports as required;
  • Participate in and contribute to all relevant briefings and meetings pertaining to the Protection of Civilians, including the Force Morning Briefings and the Protection Clusters’ Meetings.
  • Prepare case files for submission to the authorities and for inclusion in the UNJHRO data base;
  • Participate in the establishment and maintenance of contacts with local authorities as well as international organizations operating in the country and civil society;
  • Facilitate the implementation of the human rights mandate in the designated AOR aiming at the establishment of an environment of mutual understanding among the population;
  • When working with (including supervising) national staff or (non-)governmental counterparts, including Implementing Partners (IPs), the incumbent is strongly encouraged to set aside dedicated time for capacity development through coaching, mentoring and formal and on-the-job training.
  • Perform any other related duties as may be required.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

Law, Humanitarian affairs, international relations, or related field; Master’s Degree will be an advantage

Required experience:

36 Months

Experience remark:

At least 3 years’ experience in Protection and promotion of human rights; Knowledge of international human rights instruments and rules for the protection and promotion of human rights; experience in research and drafting is an asset.

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • French(Mandatory), Level - Fluent

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations/MONUSCO For this assignment, fluency in oral and written French and English is mandatory.
