Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located at the Heating, Ventilation and A/C Technician (HVAC) Shop, Mechanical and Plumbing Unit, Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities and Commercial Activities (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The incumbent reports directly to the Foreman of the Shop and also reports to the General Foreman of the Unit.

The Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions. The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at the UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also supports office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration.

Responsibilities Under the direction of the Foreman of the HVAC Shop the HVAC technician will be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:

- Maintains HVAC systems in the UN complex by servicing and overhauling pneumatic controls, steam valves and other associated equipment; repairs bearings and shafts, removes defective equipment, installs and tests new equipment.

- Performs daily inspections of the temperature and humidity controls in the conference rooms and other areas of the General Assembly Building. Makes adjustments to ensure adequate air flow, replaces filters, belts, adjusts dampers and operates instruments for balancing air quantity, replaces angle valves and elbows in window units.

- Investigates complaints i.e. climate control, and makes necessary adjustments and/or repairs including the removal and replacement of defective controls and other associated equipment.

-Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Foreman of the HVAC Shop.

-Learns the operation of the Chiller Plant and work towards obtaining Chiller Operator license.

Education High school diploma or equivalent Trade School diploma is required.

Job - Specific Qualification Possession of EPA Universal Refrigerant License is required.

Possession of a Chiller Plant Operator's license is desirable.

Work Experience A minimum of 3 years of work experience in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) trade is required.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
