1. Organizational Context

  1. Organizational Setting

The post is located in the Global Challenges Division, whose objective is to strengthen WIPO's position as the leading intergovernmental forum for addressing the intersection between intellectual property and global public policy issues. The Division engages substantively with other UN and intergovernmental organizations, the private sector, and civil society in order to lead and inform policy deliberations. It develops practical contributions to demonstrate the benefits of intellectual property in the search for solutions to major challenges facing humanity, including global health, climate change, biodiversity, and food security.

  1. Purpose Statement

The incumbent is part of a multi-disciplinary team and advises, guides, and supports the responsible officials in managing WIPO GREEN, particularly relating to its database of green technologies and matchmaking activities, etc.

  1. Reporting Lines

The incumbent works under the supervision of the Director, Global Challenges Division, Global Challenges and Partnerships Sector.

2. Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent will perform the following principal duties:

a. Identify, develop and implement practical initiatives and activities leveraging the WIPO GREEN Partner Network to connect technology providers, seekers and investors, achieving an appropriate balance between green technology needs and supply;

b. Drive improvements to the WIPO GREEN Database in its transition to a green business intelligence hub, and to ensure it serves as the central tool to connect WIPO GREEN Partners and Users, focusing on user experience and facilitating green technology development and dissemination;

c. Plan, organize, and execute WIPO GREEN Acceleration Projects;

d. Provide strategic advice and support to the Division Director on issues related to climate change, food security, and the environment;

e. Design and undertake research, and analyze and assess intellectual property, innovation, technology development, and transfer of green technologies, as well as project design and implementation;

f. Prepare project documents, including concept papers, internal memoranda, mission reports, and related WIPO GREEN promotional materials etc.; take the lead on preparing policy briefs;

g. Lead and participate in missions and meetings in order to engage with key contacts and represent the Organization at relevant meetings; advise on and implement innovative steps to grow WIPO GREEN, with a focus on the online platform as the central tool; represent WIPO GREEN and the Global Challenges Division when requested;

h. Undertake other tasks as required.

3. Requirements

Education (Essential)

Advanced university degree in life or environmental sciences, engineering, business management, or a related field. A first-level university degree plus an additional two years of relevant professional experience in addition to the essential experience mentioned below may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience (Essential)

At least seven years of relevant professional experience in the field of green innovation, green technology development, and transfer.

Experience working in the field of global environment/climate change/green technologies, including technology needs in developing countries.

Experience in conducting and summarizing research in the climate change and green technology space and providing recommendations to policymakers.

Project management experience.

Experience (Desirable)

Knowledge and experience of issues at the intersection of intellectual property and green technology development.

Knowledge of Information Technology (IT) development and processes, including those associated with running a database and managing business needs associated with IT processes, projects and products.

Experience with business transactions.

Experience in an international environment. Exposure to the private sector and/or a UN organization.

Language (Essential)

Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.

Language (Desirable)

Knowledge of other official UN languages.

5. Information

Mobility: WIPO staff members are international civil servants subject to the authority of the Director General and may be assigned to any activities, office or duty station of the Organization. Accordingly, the selected candidate may be required to move from time to time to new functions and/or to another duty station.

Annual salary****:

Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment. Please note that this estimate is for information only. The post adjustment multiplier (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change (increase or decrease) without notice. The figures quoted below are based on the June 2021 rate of 87.3%
