Duties and Responsibilities Organization Setting:

The United Nations Environment Programme is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. It is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UN Environment Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and capacity development for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition.

The consultant will support the Economics of Nature Unit (TEN). TEN hosts The Economics of Ecosystem and Biodiversity (TEEB), and the sub-initiative termed TEEB for Agriculture and Food (TEEBAgriFood). TEEBAgriFood seeks to provide a comprehensive economic evaluation of the “eco-agri-food systems” complex and demonstrate that the economic environment in which farmers operate is distorted by significant externalities, both negative and positive, and a lack of awareness of dependency on natural, human and social capital. The consultancy is in support of the EU-funded project entitled “The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity: Promoting a Sustainable Agriculture and Food Sector.’’

The consultant will report to the Head of the Economics of Nature Unit (TEN) in the Ecosystems Division.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties and responsibilities of the consultant will include:

1. Graphic Design

a) Designing communications materials such as brochures, presentations, factsheets, data visualization, infographics, and social media cards to support UNEP TEEB communications & advocacy b) Developing geospatial platforms, storymaps, and dynamic data products, among others, using data and insights from the EU-funded TEEBAgriFood project c) Re-designing and improving the project website d) Supporting staff in the Economics of Nature Unit and UNEP research partners working on the EU-funded TEEBAgriFood project with graphic design/web design/communications e) Ensure visual consistency across all products f) Transforming text-based communications materials into visual graphic design materials such as infographics, animations, illustrations and others g) Providing recommendations on relevant visual design style and materials suitable for different target audiences h) Liaise with UNEP TEEB Communications Specialist and UNEP Communications Division regarding any visual design work to ensure compliance with UNEP communications policies and branding guidelines

2. Communications support Working with the Economics of Nature Communications specialist, the consultant will contribute to the following:

a) Engage with country research partners on communication activities b) Ensure communication activities are implemented across the EUPI country portfolio c) Perform communication activities- create social media posts, edit documents, PPTs and others.

Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Graphic Design, Web Design, Communications or Environmental related areas is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Knowledge of Illustration and/or GIS skills, including knowledge of mapping software to analyze spatial data and design digital maps is desirable. A minimum of four (4) years of relevant work experience in the field, professional experience in Graphic Design, Web design and Communications is required. Previous work with UN System or International Organization is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of Spanish and/or Portuguese is desirable.
