Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The work of UN Women’s Ending Violence against Women (EVAW) Section is broadly focused on a comprehensive approach to ending violence against women (VAW) that addresses legislation and policies, prevention, services for survivors, research and data. Therein, the Global Joint Programme Strengthening Methodologies and Measurement and Building National Capacities for Violence against Women Data, with UN Women and WHO as participating UN organizations, aims to ensure that quality, comparable data on different forms of violence against women are available and collected over time to address national data gaps and meet policy and reporting commitments under the SDGs, CEDAW and the Beijing Platform for Action.

Statistics that adequately reflect the lived realities of all persons are indispensable tools for developing evidence-based policies and interventions to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment. Such statistics help understand the issue being addressed, shed light on areas where progress is made, provide evidence of what works and what does not work, and reveal gaps where further efforts are needed.

In December 2006, the UN General Assembly adopted a comprehensive resolution calling for intensification of efforts to eliminate all forms of VAW and requesting the Secretary-General to establish a coordinated database on the extent, nature and consequences of all forms of VAW, and on the impact and effectiveness of policies and programmes for eliminating such violence. The database was developed and launched in 2009 and was called the “UN Secretary-General’s database on violence against women”. In 2016, in accordance with the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, UN Women updated and redesigned the database and relaunched it as the “Global Database on Violence against Women”. UN Women serves as the Secretariat for the database. The database was designed to provide easy access to comprehensive and up-to-date information on measures undertaken by Governments to address all forms of VAW. It generates country profiles that include prevalence data on different forms of VAW and harmful practices. This data is updated annually to include the most up to date figures. The database also serves as a repository for laws and policies informed by Member States reports to the United Nations and by questionnaires sent to Member States.

UN Women also hosts a data portal with dashboards with the latest data on gender-specific SDG indicators, data on UN Women’s key thematic areas, and the latest COVID-19-related resources. One of the thematic area dashboards is on VAW. This includes data on intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, female genital mutilation, child marriage, trafficking and attitudes towards wife beating.
