Forestry Officer (Forest and Landscape Restoration)

Organizational Setting The Forestry Division (NFO) leads FAO's work in promoting sustainable forest management and providing leadership on the environmental, social and economic dimensions of forestry, including contributions of forests and trees to poverty reduction and food security and nutrition. Staff of the Division liaise with Members, civil society and the private sector in aspects ranging from development of effective forest policies to forest conservation and management issues and strengthening the role of forests in climate change mitigation and adaptation. The Division also collects, analyses and disseminates information on the world's forest resources and on the production, trade and consumption of wood and non-wood forest products.

The post is located in the NFO Forest Biodiversity and Restoration Team at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.

Reporting Lines The Forestry Officer (Forest and Landscape Restoration) reports to the Senior Forestry Officer/Coordinator Forest and Landscape Restoration Mechanism, Forest Biodiversity and Restoration Team, NFO.

Technical Focus The Forestry Officer (Forest and Landscape Restoration) will provide technical guidance and programmatic support on Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR) projects and provide support to FAO work on the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

Key Results Research, technical analysis and project related services to support the delivery of programme projects, products and services.

Key Functions • Researches and analyses technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional, and technology related information, data and statistics and/or related policy issues to support the delivery of programme projects, products and services. • Produces a variety of technical information, data, statistics and reports as well as input for technical documents and web pages. • Provides technical support/analysis to various assessments, studies and initiatives and provides technical backstopping to field projects. • Collaborates in the development of improved/updated tools, systems, processes and databases. • Participates on multidisciplinary teams, and/or leads working groups/teams collaborates with other divisions and agencies on work groups and committees and promotes best practices. • Collaborates in, provides technical backstopping to and ensures the quality/effectiveness of capacity development activities within Members such as policy support, organizational development and individual learning events including preparation of related information, learning materials, online tools. • Promotes knowledge sharing and best practices at international meetings and conferences and influences partners in stakeholder consultations. • Supports resource mobilization activities in accordance with the FAO Corporate Strategy.

Specific Functions • Provides technical oversight of The Restoration Initiative (TRI) programme funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and ensures delivery of the programme/project objectives and expected results in collaboration with partner organizations such as the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). • Provides technical expertise and oversight to decentralized offices on the planning, implementation and monitoring of forest and landscape restoration programmes/projects such as Flagship initiatives under the UN Decade on Ecosystem; Restoration and FOLUR Impact Programme under GEF7 - Ecosystem Restoration Integrated Programme under GEF8. • Provides technical expertise to resource mobilization efforts for the growth of FAO's work related to Forest and Landscape Restoration, including the preparation of new project proposals with a particular focus on Green Climate Fund, Global Environment Facility and Adaptation Fund. • Supports the delivery of the projects objectives and expected results for the FAO Forest and Landscape Restoration Mechanism (FLRM), as well as financial oversight and timely reporting. • Contributes to the promotion of knowledge sharing and best restoration practices in the context of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and reports on progress with a particular focus on key achievements within the taskforce on Best Practices. • Promotes cross-sectoral and interdivisional cooperation and collaboration regarding integrated landscape management and forest and landscape restoration. • Monitors progress on performance of the projects related to forest and landscape restoration, makes recommendations for project implementation and submits annual work plans and progress reports in a timely manner. • Performs other related duties as required. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements • Advanced university degree in forestry, natural resources management, integrated landscape management or a related discipline. • Five years of relevant experience in forestry, natural resources management or integrated landscape management, including in developing countries. • Working knowledge (proficient - level C) of English and limited knowledge (intermediate - level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

Technical/Functional Skills • Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions. • Extent and relevance of experience in planning and implementation of programmes related to restoration of degraded land and improvement of livelihood opportunities. • Extent and relevance of experience in providing support and technical advices to international organizations on forest and landscape restoration and integrated landscape management. • Extent and relevance of experience on forest and landscape restoration in different countries and regions, especially in developing countries and countries in transition. • Extent and relevance of experience in term of resources mobilization (GEF, Adaptation Fund) on forest and landscape restoration. • Extent and relevance of experience in organizing international meetings, webinars and training courses.
