Expert on Biodiversity Conservation with Focus on Renewable Energy

Result of Service The Consultant will be required to deliver a technical note on “Sustainable Energy Transition with Biodiversity Conservation in Mind” that will inform discussions during the Arab regional inception meeting on biodiversity that will be organized from 10-11 July 2023.

Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is implementing a project titled “Climate Resilience through Regional Cooperation for Inclusive Sustainable Development”.

Under the overall supervision of the Cluster Leader and direct follow up from the Chief of Energy of the Climate Change and Natural Resources Sustainability Cluster, the expert would be responsible for the following overall duties, namely:

• Draft a technical note on “Sustainable Energy Transition with Biodiversity Conservation in Mind”, examining the biodiversity related issues from an Arab perspective, identifying interlinkages with the regional and global processes organized within the framework of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), the Paris agreement of the UNFCCC and to inform on Arab actions towards reaching SDG 15. The expert will also need to analyze current regional and national challenges for synergies, tradeoffs and upscaling policy development, investment and operations and then propose methodology/practices to be used for collective Arab action. The technical note to showcase relevant best practices and case studies.
• Contribute to the discussions on biodiversity and renewable energy issues with stakeholders during the regional inception meeting that will be organized 10-11 July 2023. The meeting will take stock of the existing regional knowledge base and intra-regional mechanisms and establish a dedicated working group on biodiversity and renewable energy.

• Support the establishment of a regional multi-stakeholder, cross-sectoral platform by identifying relevant non- governmental organizations, global and regional entities that have demonstrated expertise on the protection of biodiversity in the Arab region.

  Qualifications/special skills A Master’s degree or higher degree in environmental science environmental sciences, biodiversity and conservation, ecology, engineering, natural resources management and conservation or any other relevant field related renewable energy or biodiversity is required.

All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. At least 10 years work experience in environmental science, natural resources management and conservation, sustainable energy or any other relevant field related to sustainable energy or biodiversity is required. Proven experience of at least one publication in report writing related to the topics of renewable energy is desirable. Experience in writing and editing research papers, including for publication purposes, in the areas of renewable energy, biodiversity, or climate change is desirable.

Languages Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA.

For this position, fluency in English is required.
