Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Executive Board Secretariat is the interface between UN-Women and Member States of the United Nations. The Secretary and the Secretariat team support the President of the Executive Board and the 4 Vice Presidents in organizing and delivering official and informal sessions and meetings of the Executive Board. This includes 3 official Board sessions, many informal briefings, the (joint) field visit of the Executive Boards and the joint meeting of the Executive Boards of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS, UNICEF, UN-Women and WFP. In particular, the Secretariat team holds the following roles:

  • Assists in substantive preparations of all documentation going to the Executive Board, by liaising with the substantive divisions who draft the report, with the ED Office and the ELT.
  • Assists in all logistical arrangements with regard to the Executive Board sessions and liaise with the UN Secretariat, Diplomatic Missions, regional groups, in house divisions, etc.
  • Assists in the preparations of the joint meetings of the Executive Boards of the Funds and Programmes.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Analyst in the Executive Board team, the incumbent is expected to perform the following tasks:

  • Support the team in the preparation of briefing notes, talking points and other documentation;
  • Draft generic correspondence and assist the Secretary of the Executive Board with scheduling appointments;
  • Provide other logistical and administrative support to the Executive Board Secretariat and to official sessions, informal briefings, and related events;
  • Perform other tasks as needed.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • University studies in one of the following disciplines: Social Sciences, Political Science, International Relations, or Philosophy or other relevant subjects is required.
  • Meet one of the following:
  1. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  3. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation; or
  4. Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program which is part of a degree programme and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

Renumeration:

Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.
