Background

The Spotlight Initiative was launched by the European Union and the United Nations to address all forms of violence against women and girls, and harmful practices. It follows a transformative and evidence-based approach, addressing unequal power relations between men and women and focusing on gender equality and women’s empowerment. In line with the principles of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Initiative promotes a human rights-based approach and takes into consideration the specific needs of women and girls who experience multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination and uphold the principle of “leaving no one behind”.

The Spotlight Initiative aims to support transformative change on the ground to end violence against women and girls, in numerous countries and globally. Its Secretariat is composed of two teams, the Management Unit (housed at the Multi-Partner Trust Fund Office) and the Technical Unit (housed at UN Women) reporting to the Executive Office of the Secretary-General. The Secretariat is currently undertaking two key evaluations: The Spotlight Initiative’s final evaluation and a Global Thematic Assessment, exploring the Initiative’s contribution to the women’s movement and alignment to the principle of leave no one behind.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall authority of the Spotlight Secretariat’s Heads of the Management and Technical Units of the Spotlight Secretariat and under the day-to-day supervision of the Technical and M&E Specialist, the Evaluation intern will be responsible to undertake the following activities:

  • Participate in meetings with country and regional programmes supported by the Initiative on all evaluations, in alignment with country evaluation systems and partners’ participation
  • Support the consolidation of documentation related evaluations of the Initiative’s country and regional programmes to input to reports and management briefs
  • Support the organization of meetings, workshops and other discussions for the Spotlight Initiative Secretariat to establish a dialogue on evaluation results and the evaluative knowledge management
  • Support the consolidation of guidance and instructions from the EOSG and Spotlight Secretariat as well as contribute to the design and timely implementation of a clear evaluation workplan, in line with contractual commitments;
  • Contribute to the design of a strategy and tools for roll-out of the Thematic Evaluation to partners and key stakeholders.
  • Support other administrative, research, analytical or drafting tasks related to annual reporting, as requested

Functional Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of and commitment to social justice, gender equality, women’s human rights, and issues related to ending violence against women and girls and harmful practices;
  • Familiarity with a human rights based approach to programming;
  • Familiarity with results-based management principles, particularly as they related to monitoring, reporting and evaluation;
  • Exceptionally strong organizational and project management skills;
  • Ability to juggle multiple deadlines and portfolios of work;
  • Strong knowledge of software applications (for example: Microsoft Office 365, Google workspace, Adobe creative suite).

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • University studies in one of the following disciplines: gender studies, anthropology, public administration, international development, law, political science, government, or other relevant subjects is required.
  • Meet one of the following:
    • Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher);
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent);
    • Be enrolled in a mandatory national service programme of which the internship may form a part;
    • Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within two-years of graduation.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required
  • Working knowledge, at a minimum, of either Spanish or French is highly desirable.

Renumeration:

Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.
