Duties and Responsibilities The UN Environment Management Group (EMG) is a system-wide coordination body on environment and human settlements, established in 2001 pursuant to the General Assembly resolution 53/242, hosted by the UN Environment Programme. The EMG membership consists of the 51 specialized agencies, programmes and organs of the United Nations including the secretariats of the Multilateral Environmental Agreements. The EMG identifies issues on the international environmental agenda that warrant cooperation, and finds ways of engaging its collective capacity in coherent management responses to those issues. The work of the EMG is determined by consensus of its membership that gathers at heads of agency level at the annual Senior Officials Meeting (SOM). The meetings of the Senior Officials facilitate a timely approach to addressing issues of high importance at the global environmental and human settlements agenda. The 28th Senior Officials Meeting of the UN Environment Management Group (EMG) will be held in November 2022.

The EMG Secretariat is seeking a consultant to develop two documents for consideration of the EMG Senior Officials, with the objective to inform the Senior Officials’ decisions with regard to the agenda of the EMG in 2023. Specific tasks and responsibilities include:

1. Collect information on trade and environment in the UN system and present preliminary overview and proposed actions to the EMG Secretariat;

2. Prepare analysis on current interagency cooperation on climate change in the UN system and present the analysis including the identification of possible gaps to the EMG Secretariat;

3. Prepare proposal for the EMG on its contribution to addressing climate change .

Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications:

Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent), in the area of environmental studies, sustainable development or related fields.

A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible experience working with issues related to environment and sustainable development at the global, UN system level is required.

Work Experience:

Experience in preparing strategic and forward-looking papers for the UN system or similar International Organization, familiarity with the work of UN or similar agencies on environmental issues as well as knowledge of international environmental and sustainable development institutions and intergovernmental processes including the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda is required.

Ability to conduct independent research and analysis, including familiarity with and experience in the use of various information sources. The candidate should demonstrate excellent writing skills and professional competence in analyzing complex issues and strategic planning. The candidate should have the ability to deliver outputs and work independently under pressure to meet the deadlines mentioned in the Terms of Reference.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in written and spoken English is required.
