Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Electrical and Machine Shop of the Electrical Unit (EU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities and Commercial Activities (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The incumbent reports to the Foreperson and the Lead Mechanic of the Electrical Shop.

The Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions.

The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at the UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also supports office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration.

Responsibilities Under the overall guidance of the Foreperson and the direct supervision of the Lead Mechanic of the Electrical Shop, the Maintenance Technician shall perform the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical and other related systems at the United Nations Headquarters Complex;
  • Ensures that all such electrical installations/works meet safety standards in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and New York City (NYC) building codes, norms and regulations;
  • Inspects and reports problems;
  • Provides solutions when electrical installations or power supply systems are defective or malfunctioning;
  • Performs routine, scheduled, and preventive maintenance works;
  • Performs emergency repairs as required;
  • Troubleshoots causes for malfunctions or breakdowns;
  • Estimates electrical loads in accordance with the power demands of equipment and determines electrical supply to ensure reliability and safety of use for them;
  • Assists supervisors in evaluating the performance of staff and contractors;
  • Inspects the work of trade assistants;
  • Reports and executes corrective actions to secure satisfactory standards and timely completion of works;
  • Executes work procedures and schedules by effectively and efficiently utilizing materials, labour, and equipment;
  • Conducts scheduled inspections to detect short circuits and electrical malfunctions;
  • Reports electrical faults and submits regular maintenance reports to supervisors;
  • Assists in the maintenance of inventory records of all equipment, tools, spare parts, materials, and maintenance activities;
  • Assists in checking levels of stocks regularly and recommends placing orders for spare parts;
  • Performs other duties as required.

Education High School or equivalent Trade School Diploma is required.

Job - Specific Qualification Certification in OSHA construction safety is desirable.

Passing the Trades and Crafts Test (TCT) is a prerequisite for selection in the Trades and Crafts category in the United Nations Secretariat. Applicants who have not passed the TC test at the time of application may be invited for the test after submitting an application. Staff members who were granted a fixed-term, continuing or permanent appointment as a result of having passed a predecessor test recognized by the Office of Human Resources Management, and who have continuously held such appointments, are not required to take the new test.

Work Experience A minimum of three years of experience installing, servicing, maintaining and repairing electrical equipment and installations, including familiarity with generator installations, trouble-shooting and control wiring is required.

Work experience in the electrical trade in a large organization comparable to the UN Secretariat or electrical sector company is required.

Apprenticeship experience working under a licensed Electrician is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of other official United Nations language is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice Appointment or assignment against this position is for an initial period of one year.
