Job Description

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. At work today in over 40 countries, the IRC aims to restore safety, dignity, and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure. In response to the arrival of refugees in Greece in 2015, the IRC has been offering SMS, WASH, and Protection Services. Among others, through its child protection programs, the IRC has been offering individual support through case management to vulnerable children and their families, non-formal educational activities for children through Safe Healing and Learning Spaces, and emergency accommodation and protection to unaccompanied children.

The current program (Supported Independent Living – SIL) aims at offering quality, community-based and age-appropriate accommodation, care, and support to adolescents and young adults previously living under institutional care, empowering them and equipping them with the necessary skills to ensure a smooth transition into an independent life.

SCOPE OF WORK: IRC Hellas supports vulnerable youth refugees and hosts communities in Athens to access income generation through employment and self-employment services and skills-building activities, directly and in collaboration with partners. We are looking for an Education Officer to be responsible for delivering Greek language classes according to beneficiary needs.

Key responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Implementing the education program through the realization and planning of daily lessons related to the Greek language

• Design and build on the educational curriculum, targeting and addressing the needs of different age groups

• Ensuring that all non-formal education activities are of high quality, follow established curricula, and address beneficiaries’ needs

• Evaluating objectively and regularly the beneficiaries’ performance and learning progress

• Proactively working to identify issues related to beneficiaries’ attendance and report them to the Senior Livelihoods Officer if needed

• Ensuring relevant project data (academic records, lessons plan, etc.), are accurately collected and updated on a weekly and monthly basis

Program Coordination Responsibilities

• Propose and develop other support services that serve the program goals and clients’ needs

• Maintain an accurate and up-to-date management system, case notes, and other electronic files

• Work with the Senior Livelihoods Officer to develop up-to-date training curricula, meet training objectives, and are being effectively and uniformly implemented

• Support referral pathways from IRC to other employment, education, and vocational training providers

• Any other task designated by the Senior Livelihoods Officer as requested

• Coordinate closely with the team to ensure effective implementation of the educational activities

• Participate in regular team meetings

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field, master’s degree a plus

• Demonstrated experience teaching Greek as a foreign language

• Experience in curriculum development and implementation

• Experience delivering classes in non-traditional contexts and familiarity with new educational methods and technologies (e-learning platforms) is desirable

• Confirmed ability to work with consideration and respect for cross-cultural differences

• Excellent communication skills, with fluency in written and spoken Greek and English

• Very strong organizational and interpersonal skills

• Passion for helping people to learn and demonstrating professionalism

• Desired: Experience teaching refugee/migrant population

Work environment:

Working hours: 9:00-17:00

Travel and other requirements: Occasionally to other areas of IRC programs within Athens
