Background

DRC has been operating in Greece since November 2015, providing support to the Greek Ministry of Migration Policy in ensuring dignified reception conditions for refugees and migrants arriving on Lesvos island. In March 2016, DRC expanded its operations in Athens, in response to the changing context and the build-up of refugee population on mainland Greece.

Purpose

DRC Greece is looking to recruit a qualified, flexible and enthusiastic individual to work in the non-formal education programme in Central Greece as a Cultural Mediator. Under the daily supervision of the Education Officer and overall supervision and management of the Education Team Leader and with the technical guidance from Education Coordinator and in close cooperation with the teachers, the Education Cultural Mediator, will provide support to the implementation of non-formal education activities for migrant and refugee children and youth living in emergency reception sites in Greece. The Education Cultural Mediator will support teachers in implementing educational and outreach activities that are high quality, age appropriate, and in line with the needs of children and youth students

Duties and Responsibilities

The Education Cultural Mediator responsibilities will include, but not necessarily be limited to, the following:

Implementation and design of non-formal education activities:

  • Support teachers in the implementation of non-formal education activities for school-age children (6 to 15), youth (16-18) and adults (18+) as per the populations’ needs
  • Collaborate with teachers to create a safe classroom environment and promote holistic student well-being
  • Support teachers in designing culturally appropriate educational activities based on age, educational level, and the individual needs of students
  • Promote empathy, compassion and respect for the gender, ethnic, religious, cultural, and learning diversity of students
  • Plan, organize and implement mother tongue language classes for school age children where possible
  • Assist in coordinating joint events with children, youth and adults from refugee and host communities, for integration purposes
  • Provide information to beneficiaries on existing education opportunities (formal and non-formal) and promote the right to education for all
  • Contribute to outreach activities and support the distribution of teaching and learning material (e.g. stationery, homework packs and school kits)
  • Provide translation/interpretation when necessary
  • Assist the education team in administrative tasks when relevant
  • Attend and participate in assigned meetings, activities, and trainings
  • Contribute to the identification of student vulnerabilitties and raise protection referrals to the Protection Team, Team Leader or Child Protection actor as needed.
  • Adhere to DRC’s Code of Conduct and help to create and maintain an environment that prevents child safeguarding violations and promotes the implementation of DRC’s child Safeguarding Policy
  • Contribute to the reinforcement of existing communication with persons of concern across DRC departments
  • Any other duties as may be assigned by the Education Team Leader relevant to the achievement of NFE objectives

Representation

  • Attend and participate in assigned meetings, activities, and trainings
  • Maintain effective communication with other DRC departments and actors at site-level
  • Organize and deliver on-site education/parents meetings in the area of operation as required

Programme Development:

  • Contribute to continual improvements in DRC programming and ways of working, through identification and communication of challenges, gaps, recommendations for improvements and lessons learnt.

Accountability:

Guided by the DRC Programme Handbook, suggest relevant accountability initiatives in the field.

Required Qualifications

  • At least one (1) year of professional experience in a related field (required)
  • At least 2 years’ experience working with children (highly desirable)
  • Experience in providing recreational activities to children (drama, play, games, circus, sport, storytelling, drawing/painting, arts activities, music, dancing) will be highly appreciated
  • Experience engaging with communities living in emergency reception site(s) in Greece would be a strong asset
  • Previous experience with local or international NGOs will be considered a strong advantage
  • Experience of community-based or community mobilisation work in a humanitarian context is a strong advantage
  • Good computer literacy
  • Training or courses in NFE and/or child protection/safeguarding will be considered an asset
  • English (good verbal and written skills) (required)
  • Greek (good verbal and written skills) is considered an asset
  • Strong verbal and written knowledge of Farsi (required)
  • Strong verbal and written knowledge of Dari and/or Pashto is considered an asset

Terms and Conditions

  • The contract will be under the Greek Labor Law (this is a national position)
  • All allowances will be provided to the employees (Christmas, Easter, Vacation bonus)

  • The position will be based in Larisa (Central Greece) and national terms and conditions apply
