Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Our goal is to achieve food security for all and make sure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives. With over 194 member states, FAO works in over 130 countries worldwide.

The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representative, is to assist governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security by reducing hunger and malnutrition, developing the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, and to use their natural resources in a sustainable manner. The current portfolio of projects in South Sudan includes activities related to Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Natural Resource Management, and is implemented with humanitarian, transitional and development funding. Also, FAO leads the Food Security and Livelihoods Cluster (FSL), together with World Food Programme (WFP).

The incumbent will be the focal point for the creation of photo/video content social media and the management of the twitter page of FAO South Sudan. Also, the incumbent will be responsible for the creation and management of communications content for use on social media, corporate websites, national and international med.

Reporting Lines

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative, the direct supervision of the International Communications Specialist she/he will be responsible for the following duties. (The incumbent will be based in Juba with regular travel to the field.)

Technical Focus

  • Edit videos, text and basic graphic animation in accordance to FAO corporate communication policy
  • Record and produce videos in English and local languages to document events, activities and interview with beneficiaries, staff and partners

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Lead the development of social media communication products i.e. tweets, web stories (in line with FAO’s storytelling guidelines, FAO style guide and relevant templates) and photo stories as specified under the communication plan for various donors;
  • Arrange interviews in local media of FAO Representative and more generally of FAO staff were appropriate.
  • Carry out interviews of FAO South Sudan staff, project beneficiaries and representatives from other institutions for use on social media or adapt local media interviews for corporate social media, in line with the FAO social media video guidelines.
  • Gather information from the state offices for communications materials including social media posts, press releases, reports, web stories, presentations, briefs and other materials for internal and external audiences
  • Maintain photo library; this includes providing photographs taken from activities, events, etc. and also gathering photographs from other staff members
  • Liaise with local media, update media contact list and assist in media coverage of FAO activities. Support with the facilitation of media requests and visits, upon request;
  • Visit FAO project sites to capture FAO’s activities with high resolution photos and videos (Photographs must be provided in high resolution suitable for printing, processing or publishing on web)
  • Select no less than 30 best photographs related to each field mission performed
  • Manage the communications store and the distribution of visibility materials.
  • Any other related communication duties.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • Advance degree in Communications, Media Relations, Journalism, or relevant field
  • Five (3) years of work experience in public information, media and communications role
  • Working knowledge of English
  • Good knowledge of the local language is a strong advantage;
  • National of South Sudan.

  • Experience in a UN or international organization is an advantageous;
  • Any award on photography will be an asset
