Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Content Services Unit of the Meetings Support Section, Meetings and Publishing Division, Department for General Assembly and Conference Management, New York. The incumbent reports to the Team Leader of the Desktop Publishing Team.

Responsibilities Within limits of delegated authority, the Desktop Publishing Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Produces official documents and other content intended for printing and digital publications, ensuring that their final versions conform to the UN style and typographic standards.
  • Prepares content for multichannel publishing using appropriate desktop publishing software and content management tools.
  • Participates in the production of other parliamentary and miscellaneous documentation.
  • Checks files out of and into the publishing system database.
  • Ensures that all layout changes have been incorporated accurately and alerts responsible verbatim reporter/verbatim reviser/production editor whenever errors or discrepancies are found.
  • Rotates in shifts, as well as work outside of the normal working hours.
  • Depending on the needs of the service, availability for overtime is expected.
  • Performs other related work as required.

    Education High school diploma or equivalent.

    Work Experience A minimum of three years of experience in desktop publishing, including typography and layout is required.

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in both oral and written English and Chinese is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

    Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

    Special Notice This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. Passing the Verbal Reasoning Test (VRT) in the main language of the position is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration for the Editorial and Desktop Publishing Assistant positions in the United Nations Headquarters. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
