PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

This consultancy will support effective country response operations related to COVID-19 as part of the Incident Management Support Team (IMST) of the WHO Western Pacific Regional Office in Manila and/or the Incident Management Team (IMT) in WHO Country Office with a focus on science and research.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the direct supervision of the COVID-19 Incident Manager and with the guidance of the Science Research Pillar Lead, the consultant shall perform the following tasks/responsibilities in close collaboration with colleagues in the Western Pacific Regional Office:

Provide technical assistance to the COVID-19 response activities from the Regional Office and/or WHO Country Office:

The consultant will be expected to:

  • Conduct review of evidence and relevant information on priority items identified by the WPRO IMST and provide regular updates;
  • Develop briefing notes, presentations and other related documents that will be available to Member States and areas, WHO country offices, IMST and others;
  • Prepare presentations on hot topics on the areas of his/her expertise according to the scheduled IMST meetings; and
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the pillar lead; Incident Manager and Regional Director.

Method(s) to carry out the activity

  • Research on scientific literature, WHO existing guidance and scientific papers, and media;
  • Attend IMST and pillar meetings;
  • Work in small groups when necessary to develop tasks; and
  • Collaborate with other relevant pillar and sub-pillar of the Incident Management team, as well as Technical Units.

Output/s and Deliverable/s Outputs:

  • Data analytics and drafting of findings
  • Preparation of data presentation slides/materials
  • Updated briefing notes and interim guidance
  • New briefing notes and interim guidance as requested

Deliverables

  • Monthly progress report on work performed and achieved
  • End of mission report at the end of consultancy.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: Minimum university degree in medicine, public health or other related sciences from an accredited/recognized institute Desirable: Advanced degree in public health, epidemiology or related field from a recognized university

Experience

Essential: A minimum of five to seven years of experience working and researching on epidemiology, vaccines, or infectious diseases Desirable: Previous experience with WHO or other UN agencies Previous international experience or health cluster partners

Use of language skills

Essential: Proficient in written and spoken English.
