Purpose of the Post:

Analyzing global and country data and prepare an epidemiological analysis of the leprosy situation

Objectives of the Programme****:

The main objective of GLP is to further reduce disease burden of leprosy in all Member States, with the global target of reducing the rate of new cases with grade-2 disabilities (G2D) rate per million population to less than one, reduce number of new child cases with G2D to zero and zero legislations/laws that allow discrimination on the basis of leprosy. As per the Global Leprosy Strategy 2021-2030, several countries are targeted for reaching interruption of transmission and elimination of new disease. GLP has a major role in providing normative guidance as well as monitoring global and country trends.

Organizational Context****:

Under the overall guidance of Team Leader – GLP and direct supervision of the Technical Officer – GLP, the incumbent will analyse different data elements and indicators used in monitoring leprosy programme and prepare a comprehensive status report on leprosy including long-term time trends for the world as a whole as well as for selected countries (in particular high burden countries and those that have reached or are close to zero leprosy).

Epidemiological analysis will also include trends of new case detection disaggregated by age group, disease type, disability status, gender.

Terms of Reference****:

Under the overall guidance of the Team Leader of GLP and direct supervision of the Technical officer of GLP, the incumbent will:

i. review published annual leprosy reports in Weekly Epidemiological Records

ii. review trends of data elements and indicators recorded in DHIS2 leprosy programme data base

iii. review national leprosy programme evaluation reports and leprosy elimination monitoring reports.

iv. review the literature on epidemiological analysis of leprosy data in different countries.

v. prepare a monography on leprosy situation.

Education (Qualifications****):

Essential: University degree in public health from a recognized university.

Desirable: Post graduate degree/diploma in epidemiology, public health

Essential Experience:

At least 5 years of relevant experience, including some years of demonstrated international exposure;

Relevant experience includes:

  • professional work experience in epidemiological analysis or studies in disease control
  • programmatic monitoring and evaluation in disease control field or related public health field

Desirable:

  • Working experience with UN system, in general, and the WHO system, will be an advantage.
  • Experience of working with institutions/organizations in developing epidemiological situational assessments

Functional Skills and Knowledge

Essential skills:

  • In-depth knowledge in disease control, surveillance and response and related public health areas.
  • Capacity to analyse epidemiological data of large number of countries
  • Proven ability to write technical documents in a clear and concise manner.
  • Capacity in assessing relevant operational research and epidemiological studies.

Desirable Skills:

  • Technical expertise to support leprosy control programmes at international, national or subnational levels.
  • Knowledge on ways to work with the research institutions and government programmes
  • Experience of working in an international environment.
  • Experience in publishing epidemiological analyses

Languages:

  • Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English;
  • Knowledge of either French, Spanish or Portuguese is an additional advantage

Other Skills (e.g. IT)****: Proficient in standard MS Office software applications, data analysis using statistical packages, DHIS2 and SPSS.

Additional information****:

  • The purpose of this VN is to invite qualified professionals with relevant expertise for P3 grades for possible short-term consultant assignments.
  • The duration of assignment would vary from four to six months. Any extension of contract would be subject to programmatic requirements, performance of the incumbent and availability of funds.
