BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT

The United Nations World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. The mission of WFP is to help the world achieve Zero Hunger in our lifetimes. Every day, WFP works worldwide to ensure that no child goes to bed hungry and that the poorest and most vulnerable, particularly women and children, can access the nutritious food they need.

WFP’s greatest strength is its 18,000 dedicated people working tirelessly around the world to reduce hunger, often under difficult conditions where security threats and risks to personal safety are considerable. The global context in which WFP operates is rapidly changing which means the need for effective people management is becoming more important than ever.

A key element of effective people management is staff engagement, which extensive research shows is the one of the most important factors in the overall performance of individuals, teams, and organizations.

Over recent years, WFP has made progress in this area. Since 2012, WFP has started to systematically assess and monitor the level of staff engagement through regular Global Staff Surveys (GSS). Support and guidance are also provided to the teams globally on the actions that lead to higher engagement levels.

Implementation and follow up on the GSS is managed by the Career Management branch of the Human Resources Division (HRCM). Preparatory work is underway for the next GSS which is anticipated for the first quarter of 2021, and HRCM is looking for an individual to support in the implementation of the survey and follow up on the results.

In addition to working closely with the core GSS project team, the consultant will be more broadly supported by colleagues in the rest of the branch which is currently leading on a number of very interesting and innovative developments, which will impact WFP’s approach to people management.
