**OVERVIEW** ------------ Parent Sector : Culture Sector (CLT) Duty Station: Paris Classification of duty station: \[\[filter12\]\] Standard Duration of Assignement : \[\[filter13\]\] Job Family: Culture Type of contract : Non Staff Duration of contract : From 1 to 6 months Recruitment open to : External candidates Application Deadline (Midnight Paris Time) : 6-MAR-2022 UNESCO Core Values: Commitment to the Organization, Integrity, Respect for Diversity, Professionalism **OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST** ----------------------------------------- **Background** To expand the implementation of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage - ICH - (hereinafter called “the 2003 Convention”), a position paper on methodologies for Safeguarding ICH in Urban Context (Phase 1, emphasis on ICH and urban planning), in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal - SDG - 11 *‘Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable’* will be developed. The position paper aims to generate guidelines for the effective implementation of the 2003 Convention in urban contexts and formulate recommendations for policy makers and practitioners through highlighting the role of living heritage in sustainable urban development. It will notably underpin how urban heritage is not only expressed in its built or material forms, but through the living uses and practices in cities and how they are situated in urban spaces. The document will also explore the role of living heritage in sustaining connections between urban and rural regions and communities. This is then to be integrated within the longer-term vision of sustainable cities as identified in SDG 11.4 ‘*Strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage’*. Long Description ---------------- **Work assignment** In the framework of the activities conducted by the Culture Sector Living Heritage Entity for the implementation of the 2003 Convention, and under the overall authority the Chief of the Living Heritage Entity and the direct supervision of the Programme Specialist in charge of the Safeguarding, Implementation and Monitoring Team, the Individual Specialist shall, in close collaboration with a lead consultant and a research consultant identified by UNESCO, contribute to the development of the position paper on methodologies for ICH safeguarding in urban contexts, with a special focus on urban planning. To this end, the Individual Specialist shall perform the following tasks: 1\. Support the lead consultant in charge of the production of the position paper on methodologies for Safeguarding ICH in Urban Contexts (Phase 1, emphasis in ICH and urban planning) in all the aspects directly related to urban planning. 2\. Identify how safeguarding and ICH management can be integrated within: i) all the components/structures related to urban planning (such as ecological structures, functional structure of services, public space management, socio-economic and spatial structures, public and community infrastructure, etc.); ii) urban planning strategies; and iii) urban planning elements of pressure when planning cities (e.g., urbanization, migration, development, etc.). 3\. Analyze at least 2 urban plans/master plans/development plans of cities in which ICH has been incorporated. For each case, identify the challenges and opportunities and contributions encountered by ICH in urban contexts and its contribution to sustainable urban development. 4\. Propose methodologies and tools to frame ICH safeguarding and management within urban planning frameworks. 5\. Support the lead consultant in the revision of comprehensive case studies and a bibliography on ICH and urban planning frameworks that shall take into account: • Relevant literature addressing the topic from various perspectives and, as much as possible, in a diversity of geographical and cultural contexts. • Specialized experts, institutions, and networks with suitable experience and taking into consideration, as much as possible, requirements for geographical and gender balance. 6\. Contribute to the analysis of survey on ICH in urban contexts to be produced by the lead consultant. 7\. Participate in all the meetings related to the drafting of the position paper as described under the background section, that will be organised by UNESCO and the consulting team. Long Description ---------------- **Expected duration and work location** The contract duration is expected to spread over a period of four (4) months with an estimated effective full-time work of forty (40) days.
