  1. Purpose of the Consultancy

To participate in the designing and development of the Information, Education, Communication (IEC) and other promotional materials for the implementation of the Word Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) 2021 campaign in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region.

  1. Background

World Antimicrobial Awareness Week is an annual global campaign led by the World Health Organization that aims to raise the awareness about antibiotic use and encourage best practices among the public, policymakers, and health and agriculture professionals. WAAW offers an outstanding opportunity for communities across the globe from all sectors to raise awareness about the importance of better and appropriate use of antibiotics and antimicrobials in general.

WAAW is aligned with the Global Action Plan for AMR (resolution WHA 68.7), which includes a strategic objective to improve awareness and understanding of AMR. Since 2016, countries in the region joined WAAW by implementing a range of awareness raising activities that included use of social media, printed media, media advocacy activities, radio campaigns, advocacy meetings, awareness raising meetings and events. Different audience were reached including healthcare providers, policy makers, public including students, schoolchildren and others.

Additionally, WHO’s, in collaboration with UNICEF, is urging Member States to ensure universal access to hand hygiene and improving hand hygiene practices to prevent COVID-19 transmission through implementing the “Hand Hygiene for All Initiative”. This requires that access to hand hygiene must become a reality for everyone, in all settings, especially in health care facilities, schools and crowded public spaces.

In this context, the consultant will assist the AMR/IPC Unit in the design and development of the IEC and promotional materials to celebrate the WAAW 2021 and the “Hand Hygiene for All Initiative”.

Start date: 01 August 2021

End date: 31 December 2021

  1. Work to be performed

Output 1: Work with national teams to develop IEC materials and tools to raise awareness on “****Hand Hygiene for All Initiative”

Deliverable 1.1: Participate with AMR team to design and produce communication material to promote “Hand Hygiene for All Initiative” and collect hand hygiene available promotional materials.

Deliverable 1.2: Provide technical input to the final report and the presentation summarizing overall hand hygiene for all initiative promotional materials

Output 2: Work with national teams to design, develop and implement IEC material to raise awareness on WAAW 2021 campaign

Deliverable 2.1: Participate with AMR team member to design and produce communication material to promote the regional campaign of the world antimicrobial awareness week and coordinate activities with country offices.

Deliverable 2.2: Collaborate with AMR team to develop a final report and a presentation summarizing promotional materials and activities for WAAW 2021 in the regional office.

Required Qualifications

Education: A University degree in Communications, Journalism or related field -

Experience****:

-Skills / Technical skills and knowledge:

  • Excellent in written and verbal communication

  • Ability to express clearly and concisely ideas and concepts in written and oral form

  • Competent in the use of computer and internet information software, use of desktop publishing software

  • Ability to analyse diverse information and develop recommendations for various public health problems

  • Able to work and follow-up independently
  • Ability to focus on a variety of tasks within a deadline-driven environment
  • Ability to communicate and work closely with a variety of people within a multicultural environment
  • Takes initiate/self-starter

- Language requirements:

  • English (Read - Write - Speak / Expert level)
  • Knowledge of other languages in the Region such as Arabic, Dari, Urdu or Farsi are an asset.
  1. Place of assignment

EMRO premises

Travel when deemed necessary to provide technical assistance to countries, and attend meetings and conferences.

Medical clearance : The selected Consultant will be expected to provide a medical certificate of fitness for work.

Travel (If travel is involved, a medical certificate of fitness for work will be required.) All travel arrangements will be made by WHO – WHO will not be responsible for tickets purchased by the Consultant without the express, prior authorization of WHO. While on mission under the terms of this consultancy, the Consultant will receive subsistence allowance. Visas requirements: it is the consultant’s responsibility to fulfil visa requirements and ask for visa support letter(s) if needed.
