Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA's Major Programme 2, "Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection". This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The Major Programme's objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage the marine and terrestrial environments through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes.

The Joint FAO/IAEA Centre of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture assists Member States of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the IAEA in using nuclear techniques and related technologies to improve food security, alleviate poverty and promote sustainable agriculture. The Joint Centre consists of five Sections, each with an associated laboratory (located in Seibersdorf, 45 km south-east of Vienna), in the areas of: animal production and health; plant breeding and genetics; insect pest control; soil and water management and crop nutrition; and food and environmental protection.

The Animal Production and Health Section and Laboratory assist Member States in improving livestock productivity through the efficient use of locally available feed resources, reproduction and breeding practices, and disease diagnostic tools and control measures.

Main Purpose

The incumbent is expected to expand and strengthen the activity of the Animal Production and Health subprogram in the context of the One-Health concept and, specifically, in the implementation of the Global Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).

The work will focus on assisting Animal Production and Health Laboratory (APHL) with developing an AMR working plan, training modules on AMR, support and advise on the AMR component of various Technical Cooperation Projects, attend and organize meetings and workshops in the area of interest and assist fellows and interns. The incumbent will also contribute to promote research and development activities in APHL and Member States (MS) laboratories on AMR

Functions / Key Results Expected

Design and develop guidelines for the Joint FAO/IAEA Centre to assist member states on effective implementation of global/national action plans and activities on AMR Develop technical guidelines on documentation and quality assurance related to antimicrobial susceptibility/sensitivity testing (AST). Optimize and establish different methods of antimicrobial susceptibility/sensitivity testing (AST) at Animal Production and Health Laboratory, Seibersdorf Draft requirements and optimize gene-based methods to implement passive molecular AMR surveillance using clinical/diagnostic veterinary samples under the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VETLAB) network framework. Plan and implement fellowship/national/regional training modules on molecular techniques related to AMR Advise technical officers on AMR components of national technical cooperation projects. Prepare periodical reports on activities of Animal Production and Health section related to implementation of FAO Action Plan on AMR. Write and publish manuscripts in the area of competence.

Qualifications and Experience

Bachelor's Degree - Pharmaceutical Sciences or Medical Sciences related fields. Minimum five years of work experience in the pharmaceutical or antimicrobial sector. Experience in research and field activities as well as on policy guidelines related to antimicrobial resistance. Good knowledge of the on-going global initiatives on AMR. Good knowledge of the principles and practices of epidemiology and the relevant data collection and analysis methods. Familiarity with methods of antimicrobial susceptibility or sensitivity testing and gene sequencing principles and techniques. Knowledge of statistical methods used in epidemiology and sequence analysis. Good experience in organizing and implementing international trainings, with specific reference to AMR related topics. Good experience in project management and coordination in the area of interest. Proven experience in writing and publishing scientific papers. Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset

Remuneration

The remuneration for this consultancy is a daily fee of up to a maximum of € 251, based on qualifications and experience. In case duty travel is required within the assignment, a daily subsistence allowance (DSA) and travel costs are provided. Health coverage and pension fund are the responsibility of the incumbent.
