BACKGROUND

Data & Analytics Section (D&A) is located within the Division of Data, Analysis Planning and Monitoring (DDAPM) at UNICEF’s New York headquarters. D&A has a leadership role in providence evidence on the situation of children by supporting the collection, analysis, understanding and use of robust data and statistics, programme data, data science, big data analytics and data literacy.

Scope of Work

The primary function of this post is to support the maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health (MNCAH) portfolio on key activities related to: The harmonization and updating of the indicators in the global database, the development of data-driven products, and new tools for data collection/analysis/dissemination. The work focuses on MNCAH measurement and monitoring

  1. Data collection, compilation, analysis and quality assurance
  • Support UNICEF’s sector lead on Health and HIV and the focal point for MNCAH on the development of products on child health (malaria and pneumonia related data products), maternal and newborn health, and adolescent health (mental health, sexual and reproductive health, NCDs, etc). Products will include inputs into UNICEF publications, fact sheets, data driven briefings, brochures, country profiles and interactive dashboards, and related materials.
  • Provide support on the updating and expansion of the MNCAH database including emerging areas of programmatic interest like chronic diseases, injuries, disabilities, mental health and other adolescent health indicators.
  • Support the development of a monitoring framework for adolescent health and adolescent mental health in particular.
  • Support corporate and global reporting process including strategic planning indicators, country reporting, SDG reporting, Countdown to 2030 and updating of databases.
  • Support Integrated database process (variable and value harmonization of databases). Internal data harmonization platform
  1. Methodological support
  • Conduct literature reviews, mapping of activities and produce analytical summaries related to on adolescent health and well-being, including mental health, non-communicable diseases, and on chronic diseases and injuries among children and adolescents ages 0-19
  • Review country specific survey reports and tools from the Multiple Indicators Cluster Survey program.
  1. Data dissemination and advocacy
  • Support the updating of relevant UNICEF-related website pages for Health (MNCAH) related indicators (produce updated charts with new regional aggregates, review content and suggest edits according to updated figures and databases).
  1. Support to COVID related activities
  • Database support tasks and quality assurance processes for dashboard, database, summary reports, cross cutting analysis, publications etc.

Qualifications

1) Education

  • A university degree in demography, global health, public health, social sciences, epidemiology or statistics. An advanced degree in these areas is an asset.
  • Proven experience in working with STATA or R (preferable) – specifically, experience analyzing microdata from household surveys, in particular DHS and MICS.

2) Work experience

  • 2 years of work experience at the national or international levels in statistical data processing, data analysis, and development/maintenance of statistical databases.
  • Proven experience analyzing, compiling and presenting data, with a focus on Health (MNCAH)-related areas preferably.
  • Proven experience in data analysis and writing to disseminate key data and findings to technical and non-technical audiences, particularly related to health (MNCAH indicators).
  • Proven experience in conducting literature reviews and summarizing findings is an asset.

3) Competencies

  • Strong organizational, planning, and analytical skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English.
  • Good judgment, initiative, high sense of responsibility, tact and discretion.
  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and ability to establish harmonious working relations in a multicultural environment.)

  • Any emergent / unforeseen duty travel and related expenses will be covered by UNICEF
  • At the time the contract is awarded, the selected candidate must have in place current health insurance coverage.
  • Payment of professional fees will be based on submission of agreed satisfactory deliverables. UNICEF reserves the right to withhold payment in case the deliverables submitted are not up to the required standard or in case of delays in submitting the deliverables on the part of the consultant.

U.S. Visa information:

With the exception of the US Citizens, G4 Visa and Green Card holders, should the selected candidate and his/her household members reside in the United States under a different visa, the consultant and his/her household members are required to change their visa status to G4, and the consultant’s household members (spouse) will require an Employment Authorization Card (EAD) to be able to work, even if he/she was authorized to work under the visa held prior to switching to G4.
