About UNICEF

If you are a committed, creative professional and are passionate about making a lasting difference for children, the world's leading children's rights organization would like to hear from you. For 70 years, UNICEF has been working on the ground in 190 countries and territories to promote children's survival, protection and development. The world's largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments. UNICEF has over 12,000 staff in more than 145 countries.

BACKGROUND

Purpose of Activity/Assignment:

Climate change and environmental degradation are some of the biggest threats affecting the world’s children and have the potential to undermine many of the gains we have made in child survival and development. Over a billion children are already at extremely high risk of environmental and climate hazards including heat waves, floods, cyclones, etc. There is an urgent and acute need for countries to adapt, prepare and build climate-resilient, low-carbon social services, such as – water and sanitation (WASH), healthcare, education, nutrition, social protection and child protection – for current hazards, and in preparation for more frequent and severe climate hazards. Moreover, as there are limits to climate change adaptation, and some impacts are irreversible, effective humanitarian responses that do no harm and concurrently reduce the risk from recurring climate change impacts are necessary. UNICEF, with our extensive field presence in the hardest to reach places, aims to support climate resilient and low carbon communities for every child. These are among the best investments we can make for the most vulnerable children who live in communities that are at most risk from the impacts of climate change and compounded risks.

Climate financing (defined here as funding from the ‘vertical’ climate funds such as Green Climate Fund (GCF), Global Environment Facility (GEF), Adaptation Fund (AF), and Least Developed Country Fund (LDCF)), for both mitigation and adaptation, to increase the resiliency of social services, is growing but needs to expand be scaled-up significantly, sustainably and urgently. Currently, UNICEF is a Delivery Partner for GCF Readiness, and its application to be an accredited entity is under review. This assignment will be performed both in anticipation and support of UNICEF’s application for accreditation and to deepen UNICEF’s partnership with entities that are already accredited.
