The Position:

Under the direct supervision of the Speechwriter, Office of the Executive Director, the Communications Specialist will draft high-impact speeches, statements, talking points, op-eds and social media posts for the Executive Director (ED). The Communications Specialist will be required to translate politically sensitive and complex material into clear, understandable language that is accessible to a broad audience and accurately reflects the Executive Director’s ideas and the position of UNFPA.

Job Purpose:

The Communications Specialist plays a vital role in communicating the vision, mission and impact of UNFPA globally to key stakeholders, often holding the final pen on much of what is produced externally for the Executive Director and senior OED leadership.

S/he works to ensure the highest possible impact for the Executive Director’s public and social media engagement, positioning her effectively with key global audiences and building greater visibility for the organization – all while protecting the Fund from reputational risk.

In addition to drafting written communication materials, the Communications Specialist manages the development of multimedia content for the Executive Director. This is an increasingly important role given the proliferation of virtual events and digital campaigns.

Qualifications and Experience

Education:

Advanced university degree in journalism, communications, political science, economics, international development, international relations, public administration or any other relevant discipline.

Knowledge and Experience:

• Five years of experience in high-level writing projects, especially in drafting speeches but also editorials, op-eds, and other written materials;

• Experience in digital and social media, including Twitter and online publishing;

• Excellent organizational skills and experience in managing projects within strict deadlines;

• Prior experience working in research, policy analysis, multilateral cooperation and promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender equality and women’s empowerment is strongly desired;

• Good knowledge/understanding of the UN system preferable; experience working in a multilateral organization is an asset.

Languages:

Fluency in English; knowledge of other official UN languages, preferably French and/or Spanish, is desirable.
