OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The Department of Communications (DCO) objectives are to lead the development of the corporate communications plan, drive prioritization and ‘right size' effort with expected impact for WHO; position WHO as the authoritative and trusted voice on health at the global level through working with technical departments to develop strategies to amplify WHO's normative work; lead WHO media outreach, incl. crisis/ emergency communication with input from technical departments as well as across all 3 levels; drive all communication to the general public as well as responding to media enquiries; lead on global advocacy (e.g. health campaigns, public health information, donor visibility for resource mobilization); provide digital global production capacity & expertise to support all levels of the organization.

Organizational Context:

Under the guidance of the Internal Communications Team Lead, the Communications Officer (internal communications) will support HQ internal communications and will assist in coordinating the communication strategies between the six regional offices. The incumbent will also help with corporate branding and internal events, making sure that the widest possible internal audiences have access to these. Finally, the Communications Officer, Internal communication acts as a focal point in the central communications team for internal communications during external crises.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

  • Producing content for internal communications channels (written stories and announcements, video content, graphic material).
  • Supporting strategy and campaign development and rollout, including liaising with programme colleagues on priority staff-focused content.
  • Lead, when appropriate, internal events (webinars, meetings, etc) that help disseminate corporate communications content.
  • Coordinate the production of the Who's WHO video series, including identifying and liaising with featured staff, working with the videographer, gathering b-roll and photos as necessary, drafting YouTube summaries and Tweets and ensuring timely dissemination.
  • Develop a set of SOPs for internal communications at WHO; Assemble newsletters to the workforce, highlighting current topics, on a regular basis.
  • Maintain the Internal Communications calendar on the Intranet, ensuring pertinent staff events are entered and displayed. Initiate activities to increase usage of and engagement in the Workplace.
  • Assist in developing and delivering information and communications products intended for WHO staff for the WHO intranet and on other platforms and channels, and keep these products updated and relevant.
  • Support outreach to WHO regional offices to enhance linkages between the global internal communications strategy and strategies of the six regional offices and incrementally increase their coordination.
  • Support internal communications efforts during external or institutional crises and during periods of major change.
  • Support internal events such as Director-General (DG) Town Hall Meetings, corporate lunchtime seminars, etc. and ensure that the widest possible internal audiences have access to these including through the use of webcasts and other technologies.
  • Contribute to communications surge capacity Work as part of WHO emergency communications teams as needed during humanitarian or public health emergencies and be deployed to the field as needed.
  • Coordinate with WHO Regional and Country Office colleagues to share corporate content and amplify content from offices across the three levels of the Organization.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: A first-level university degree in communications, journalism, public health, health communications or related fields.

Desirable:Training in corporate communications, marketing, Human resources, negotiations or diplomacy; or equivalent inexperience.

Experience

Essential: At least 2 years experience in internal communications in an international setting, corporate communications, crisis or risk communications, communications for change management.Experience in large institutions and in a multinational environment.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 49,254 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 3399 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
